Maryam Jameelah

مریم جمیلہ

1934–2012 · USA, Pakistan · Writer, critic of Western modernity

Born Margaret Marcus in Westchester County, New York, to a secular Jewish family, she was drawn to Islam by Pickthall’s translation of the Qur’an and Muhammad Asad’s The Road to Mecca. After corresponding with Abul Aʿlā Mawdūdī she embraced Islam in Brooklyn in 1961 and moved to Lahore in 1962, where she married Muhammad Yusuf Khan, who published her books for the rest of her life.

Over fifty years she wrote more than thirty books and pamphlets arguing that Islam and modern Western civilisation cannot be reconciled, criticising Muslim modernists and Western orientalists alike, and writing on women and the family, technology, and the Islamic revival movements. Her work was translated into Urdu, Persian, Turkish, Bengali, Indonesian and Arabic. Her papers are held by the New York Public Library and the Chughtai Library in Lahore. She died in Lahore in 2012.
