Imran N. Hosein

b. 1942 · Trinidad and Tobago · Islamic scholar and author on eschatology, finance and world affairs

Imran Nazar Hosein was born in 1942 in Trinidad and Tobago into an Indo-Trinidadian family. He studied Islam under Muhammad Fazlur Rahman Ansari at the Aleemiyah Institute of Islamic Studies in Karachi, took postgraduate work in philosophy at Karachi University, and studied international relations at the University of the West Indies and at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. He has spent much of his life as a teacher and preacher, and for about ten years he gave the monthly Friday sermon at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

His writing concentrates on Islamic eschatology, interpreting Qur’anic passages and hadith about the End Times in light of modern politics, and on the Qur’anic prohibition of riba, the case for gold and silver money, and criticism of modern financial systems. Titles such as Jerusalem in the Qur’an, An Islamic View of Gog and Magog in the Modern World, Constantinople in the Qur’an and Dajjal, the Qur’an and Awwal al-Zaman are widely distributed in English and translated into many languages. Many are published in small independent editions, which makes their dates difficult to fix.

His views, including on geopolitics and some hadith, are controversial; some scholars have criticised them, and he has been refused entry or the platform in a few countries.
