Peggy dearest, your always looked forward to letter (of June 15th), which the enclosed one from Mr. Mamani, received - also the bill from New Era which was paid immediately. We can well understand what you are going through with that intense heat - it is very hot here (in the 90’s) and so humid. I haven’t been for a walk in more than a week but am going to the Post Office in a few minutes as I want to mail this to you.
Betty’s new address is: 245-05 Hamilton Ave. Stamford, Connecticut 06902 U.S.A.
81 Marriott Hotels. August 29, 1982
Dearest Peggy, -
This was to be a family letter but Walter and Debi were not caught in time. Both are in Boston right now - and Sue is back in New Orleans teaching second grade (School opened earlier than expected so she could not come down).
We have had a beautiful two weeks, staying close to Betty’s here in Stamford - Our old time friends from Larchmont. We’re most attentive and yesterday we had an enjoyable visit with Aunt Ros, Helene, Bob, Ann and her husband and two years old little daughter - Aunt Ros now has 7 great grand children! (we leave for Florida this afternoon)
82 Betty’s and Walter’s new home is charming and, after the difficult breaking away from Plainfield, I think they will like it here.
Daddy wants to add a few lines and Betty does too - So very much love to you and each of your dear ones. - Mother.
Darling Margarett: We have folded so few of you aged so far Grandpa, Mildred, Peggy have been proudly shown and read. Letter widely and affectionately read. Much, much love - Daddy
Dear Peggy -
We have had a grand visit with Mother & Dad here in Stamford. They are as young as ever - hope you and I inherit those genes. Hearing about your beautiful children & seeing their pictures has been a joy. Walt joins in sending love kisses to you all -

Dearest Peggy, -
We were delighted to receive your letter of Feb. 8th written just before Sa’adia’s wedding and enclosing those precious pictures of Khan Sahib, Marya, Sa’adia and Khalid (What a handsome lad he is!) Now we are eagerly awaiting news of the wedding and as many pictures as you can spare. In fact we are planning to do a special album of pictures of our Pakistani family - Sa’adia wrote us a lovely letter enclosing a snapshot of herself with her college friends. She is so pretty and I know made a beautiful bride. May she be very, very happy in all the years to come - We are writing separate letters to her and will enclose a check, as you suggested - This will be made out to you, but we know you will open an account in her name, to be used as she wishes for her future needs - This will go registered certified mail.
We have been very impressed with all your activities - and to know you must be feeling better makes us so relieved - Where will Sa’adia and her husband live? Can she continue with her studies? Now we long for details of all that has taken place. Daddy joins in sending much, much love to you and each of your, and our, dear ones - Mother - ی ت یت شا کا و ھ رہہ 2 یع 0 2 9 2-4 رص ع 2 عون

Love, November 26th, 1983
Dearest Peggy, -
This has been a perfect reunion - And a joyful one. Don’t think you were left out - Your pictures and many of your letters were read and it almost seemed as if you, Khan Sahib, and each of the children were with us too. Betty, Walter, Debi and Sue look just as they did two years ago. So no pictures were taken - They are all active, busy people and are leaving this morning for their separate homes. Each went to add a special word to you -
Much, much love
Peggy dear-
Mother
This has indeed been a memorable visit - Mother and Dad are as wonderful as ever. You would be as pleased as we are. Khan Sahib’s handbill was translated for Daddy and we read about his admirable achievements.
Time has gone too fast this Thanksgiving but we’ll have to board our planes soon. Much love to you all-
Betty
Aunt Peggy-
For me to say that it’s been too long since we were last in contact with each other is, at the very least, an understatement. I read your letters and looked at your pictures with great interest - there are so many questions which I’d like to ask in order to get a sense of you, your family, and your life. In fact, I’m sufficiently curious that I intend to write to you within the next week. Therefore, this isn’t goodbye but, rather, a promise that you’ll hear from me soon. Love always, Debi.
Dear Aunt Peggy -
I’m glad that your parents always insist that we at least write a line or two! You and your family are always a topic of discussion and interest when we get together. I always came away with intentions of really writing to you - somehow these intentions don’t materialize (maybe this time ??). Your parents are terrific, with ever-sharpening senses of humor.
The most fulfilling part of my life currently is my work - even with the trials and tribulations of dealing with the inefficient and (seemingly) uncaring bureaucracy, I can close the door to my classroom and truly enjoy my children (5 & 6 year-olds). They are endlessly fascinating to me!
My space allotment is exhausted - like Debi, I would love to really communicate with you. Maybe it’s not knowing “where” to begin that keeps me from doing it.
Please give my regards to your family. Love -
Sue
Dear Peggy,
We have so many things for which to be thankful this year, not the least of which is the news that you and your family are well and happy. Your parents are amazing, and as always it has been a delight to meet with them, perhaps some day our families can enjoy giving thanks together - until then we’ll continue to hope for your family’s good health and happiness from afar.
Love,
Walter I Mr. & Mrs. Herbert S. Marcus 2421 N.E. 36 Street Lighthouse Point, FL 33064

My dearest middle-aged daughter; ‘tis always we were happy to receive your letter of March 21st. together with photo of yourself and Marya. Also be a pleased and an ever-expanding been devotedly to you and family. Mother is doing nicely; she takes daily medication and the doctor’s prognosis is very favorable. She has increased energy, also nice scallops; has a broad care for her and prepares interesting menus. YUMMY!! I had a checkup this past week and for an elderly person my condition is excellent. Robert, Cooley, forward to my 90th birthday. One’s viewpoint is as slow & one’s possessions two adult generations will elaborate in my next book.
His gratify year to learn that the 21 years you will be seeing a right of share, I’ve heard is empty afterrunner of adult travel 96 We are pleased that Sa’adia is happy in her marriage and that she is deeply concerned about Khalid’s education and that he feels fully obligated. Wish he would personally keep me informed.
Betty, Walter and your two nieces are in a state of change and Mathu will keep you informed.
Do folks smile in Pakistan? I don’t keep a smile on a very safe. When the photo is being snapped tell everybody to say CHEEZ!
Dearest fondest love to you, Khalid, Haider, Meaza, Sa’adia, Sheik and Moo, from
Daddy & Mathu 97 September 3rd, 1984
Dearest Peggy,
Today is Labor Day—all banks and offices closed (including the Post Office) but everything else is open—as it is on most holidays today. I’ll try to take this to the Post Office tomorrow as we want you to hear from us as soon as possible. Your wonderful letter with the pictures and note from Khalid (Can he type?) and Sa’adia were so welcome. They arrived on Saturday, taking only about a week to reach us. I hope by now you have received Daddy’s letter in which I enclosed Betty & Walter’s new address. Anyway I’ll give it to you again.
205 Pond Terrace Washington Township, New Jersey 07675 U.S.A.
Walter was sixty years old on Aug. 31st and he and Betty celebrated by spending the weekend in New York. Debi and Sue visited them before returning to their respective homes.
Last night Jimmy telephoned to tell us he was a grandfather. His daughter was married about two years ago. Her husband is a marine and stationed in California. This makes 98 Aunt Helen a great grandmother. He should call to congratulate her. Aunt Leslie also telephoned us. She is fine and visits often with Mary and Ann. Ann’s daughter is 26 years old and her son is 24. No marriages yet. Aunt Rosalyn has had two heart attacks this summer & it seems much better and is still living with Helene. I talked to her a few days ago. She said she has lost more than forty pounds in weight and nothing fits her any more. We adore the picture of you and him. He stands there so proudly and is very advanced for his age. Sa’adia seems content with her life and Khalid is surely to be congratulated for making those good grades and getting into college. Can you explain why they teach science in English? There must be few students in Pakistan who can speak English (or understand it) that well. I’ll try to write letters to both Khalid and Sa’adia but may not be able to include them in this one. Daddy and I are getting along quite well. He’ll be glad when this hot summer is over. Couldn’t live down here without air conditioning but, as long as we stay indoors with it on we are comfortable. Much, much love from, Khan Sahib, Sa’adia, Zulfiqar Haider and Maryam. Sincerely, Mother and Dad I November 10, 1984
Dearest Peggy, Khan Sahib, Khalid, Haider, Maryam, Sa’adia and Shaheer, -
The cassette arrived yesterday in perfect condition. We were so touched with emotion when we heard your voices and so enjoyed it. This was a beautiful, loving thing to do, Peggy darling, and we cannot tell you in words how much it means to us. It is much better than a telephone call because we can play it over and over - which is what we have been doing. The family’s command of English is remarkable and Maryam’s sweet voice singing “Happy Birthday” brought tears to our eyes. It is good to hear in your own words about the lives you are leading! Sa’adia and Shaheer with their darling baby sound very content. I would give much to put my arms around each of you and give you a big Grandmother hug (Grandfather feels the same way).
Please thank Mr. Nasmani for joining in. His kindness and friendly feeling make him seem a member of the family. We do not have a recording machine but shall try to borrow one and make a cassette for you when Betty, Walter, Debi and Sue are here for the big 90th Birthday celebration.
Our weather here has turned cooler and the days are glorious - so glad you are having the same in Lahore. The postman will be here shortly and I want to mail this as soon as possible.
We are both fine, do our shopping and take long walks now. Much, much love to each one of you - Your devoted Mother, Daddy, Grandmother and Grandfather.
December 9, ‘84
Dearest Peggy -
Your tape was a joy for all of us - and the nicest present you could have given Daddy! It made much of the distance between us seem ever so much smaller…. and the children’s and Khan Sahib’s ability to use the English language is indeed impressive. I’m sure that the tape will be played many times.
Dad’s 90th birthday was a big success. Debi, Walter and I arrived the night before & then met Sue’s plane. We stayed at a hotel about a mile away from 36th Street. Dad had invited several neighbours and friends for a “sip” of champagne and sandwiches around noon - very, very pleasant. He had calls from Aunt Donnie, Aunt Helen, Jim & Judy, which kept him busy most of the day. At night we went to a very good French restaurant…. Daddy enjoys his eating.
Peggy, I have not been able to pay the recent bills for books that I know you’re looking forward to. Hold off sending any more for a while and I’ll take care of the ones you’ve already sent just as soon as I can.
Meanwhile I hope you enjoy hearing the words from us as much as we’ve enjoyed hearing yours.
Much love to you all - Betty 102 Dear Aunt Peggy-
This is just a note to let you know that I did take the pictures you asked for. As soon as they’ve been developed, I’ll send them to you along with a real letter. Love to all of you,
J.B.
Dearest Peggy, - This is the combination letter I promised only Walter and Sue are busy with the cassette which I hope comes across clearly. We had a wonderful week-end - even the weather cooperated as it was sunny and cool. Daddy enjoyed it all - and so did I. Now, tomorrow night a women’s group I connected with the Unitarian Fellowship is honoring Dad’s 90th birthday. (Husbands will be there too.) After that we’ll return to our normal quiet life. Received your letter and the dear one from Sa’adia. We’ll take care of all the postage you owe so don’t worry about that. Also, as soon as the Christmas rush is over we’ll mail the cassette to you - Let’s look for pictures of us all but it may take a little while to have them developed. Each of your family are surely in thought - and you and they are surely part of us - Much, much love to you, Khan Sahib, Sa’adia, baby no. 1, Khalid, Naider, Marya - Remember us to everyone. Devotedly always, Mother - The dear
Dearest All, The sound of your voices has been a large contribution to our celebration. I am deeply grateful for your good wishes in prose, I hope and song! Truly, much love, 103 Mr. & Mrs. Herbert S. Marcus 421 N.E. 36 Street Lighthouse Point, FL 33064

My dearest Peggy! Here are the pictures Debi took when she was here for Daddy’s 90th birthday. Sorry they are not better, or more, but these were the best we could do. They bring you up to date any way. Did you receive the letter we all wrote to you? - and what about the cassette? This was sent at great trouble and expense - We do hope you and the family could hear our voices distinctly -
Mom, I have been having some intestinal trouble and am being admitted to the hospital on Monday (Jan 14th) for tests. Just pray everything comes out all right!
Love let us hear from 104 Nov. 19, 1984
Darling Daughter: What a delight to receive the cassette with the voices of the entire family, with a special addition in by Mr. Usmani. Mail communication by each one gives us feeling that we sense the thoughts and personalities. However, we have added perception hearing their voices, augmented by song and rhyme. We fully realize the effort involved to gather the voices of Grandma, Grandpa and Mrs. Tesmanie, but you have the compensation of realizing it has been a fine solace of the affections.
I find the birthday greetings from you, especially, and each grandchild in particular, with expressions of love profoundly touching, and 105 August 14, 1984
Dearest Daughter,
We were happy to receive your letter with the good news that Khaled is eligible to enter college. Sorry, he did not receive my letter expressing an opinion or wish that he pursue educationally in order to find a suitable place or some surrogate as with the Our family here is in a state of flux. Betty and Walter moving closer to Walter’s office; Debbie to Elizabeth, N.J. to be near her law school. I just had notice of her M.A. Phan Salub’s brother invited me to a marvelous event at the C. Limples’s. I wish we had the opportunity of meeting them. Mother and I keep well and during this last, seemed weather stay close to home. However, during last week, for the heavy, the 106 to a hotel nearby for one evening. While we have an inkling of a Khaled, Manja and Haider ephemeral. Manja has a birthday. Sugan how old?
We are so interested in detail, you are in contact with people, and want to learn you please resent the Sikalinar Garden. We remember the the presidential campaign is beginning of the election. It was a clash of two-different philosophy of government, and it will be fascinating as vital issues are debated.
Present thoughts. Connect you, Habib, Sodia, Khaled, Haeder, Haeder Habib and Roo. With much affection
Matthew and Dad
IS EVIDENCED BY FOREGOING WRITING IS A CHORE 107 Dearest, Peggy, - August 3rd, 1958
I do hope you received my letter sent several weeks ago in which I gave you all news of the family. If not it will arrive some time. I am sure, I via mail but I’ll repeat in another letter to bring you up to date. I also asked for more pictures. I grew and your dear family. Daddy particularly regrets that a group picture be taken so that it can replace one he keeps framed on his chest of drawers which is many years old. We also are keeping up with the picture album which we enjoy looking at from time to time.
We were delighted to read in your letter of July 16th that you went through Ramadan so well and had a happy time on the Id.
The book “Man and Golam” arrived on this morning’s post. It was sent directly to our address because our check which paid for it and the postage must have confused the book seller in Brooklyn. We will forward the book to you as soon as possible but it will probably go by sea. The order sent in your last letter has also been paid as you requested. We’ll have to make it clear that these books be sent to Pakistan. I believe, however, this was the first time a mistake was 108 made: despite the very hot weather we are getting along O.K. Daddy has a checkup on his eyes this morning, but it is faster how his sight has improved - We are so thankful.
I still get tired but otherwise am beginning to lead “my normal life” cooking three meals a day (also breakfast does not count). Daddy is such a help washing all the dishes etc.
We do very little and stay home most of the time. Our friends have all gone north until October - We are grateful for TV although the summer programs are pretty poor. Air conditioning makes it comfortable.
We were so happy to have those letters from Sa’adia and her dear husband. I love, promised to write and will do so soon.
Daddy joins in sending love to each and every one of you - We think the heat in Lahore and can’t complain of it here.
Lovingly,
Mother 109 Dearest Peggy, -
Friday, July 13th, 1983
Naby’s photo was received yesterday. I am immediately sending the ones you wrote to Betty and to Lets. Please do not worry about our being “housebound”. This is only because of the heat and lack of transportation (most of our friends have gone north for the summer and others are no longer driving. However, we do have a young woman for two hours every Monday. She takes one or the other of us to the market and also does all the cleaning - a great help - I am still cooking and daddy seems to enjoy our meals - a good sign!
We have recently sent a check for fifty dollars to Klerett in Brooklyn - Hope it won’t be too long before you receive your books -
Did Khalid receive daddy’s letter written specially to him? We are delighted that he passed his exams - What will he do now? Only hope he will have further educational ambitions and can train for something specific - Please congratulate him for us. Perhaps, because of Ramadan, you haven’t heard from Sa’adia - It would be wonderful to hear she has been able to visit Lahore again. Aunt Rosalyn’s letter and check to you must have been mislaid or stolen.
110 Leo. Write her anyway - she seems to be making a good recovery - We speak to each other by ‘phone - she has been home about a month.
Also in touch by telephone with Betty last week and every now and then with Aunt Helen and Aunt Dottie; both are well. Sue and Dalis write us letters which is fine. Sue is sending for 11th summer at the camp in Vermont and is now a supervisor and enjoying the change - she and Dalis are very close as sisters - They visit each other when they can and Sue went to New Jersey with Dalis (before going to camp) to help her find an apartment - Dalis moves on August 1st and Betty and Walter on August 10th - I do not know their addresses yet but will send them to you when received - Sue plans to return to New Orleans to teach her underprivileged, all black tots, whom she adores. Maryam is all right now and that you and our Pakistani precious family are well loving greetings - To each one of you our Dear Daddy and Mother 111 June 12, 1983
Dearest Peggy, -
We were so happy to receive your letter and also one from Khalid (which daddy will answer separately) - and the splendid group picture - All of these bring us up to date for which we are most grateful -
Did you receive my last letter in which I enclosed a little “50” Memento given to me thirty-two years ago? It is sterling silver but only sentimental value - so if it was stolen don’t feel sadly. I, somehow kept it all these years but wanted you to have it on your epochal birthday.
You are going through the difficulty of fasting for Ramadan - I know how hard this must be for you - especially in the very hot weather. When is the Eid?
The temperature here is close to 90° every day which would not be too bad if it wasn’t for the humidity - Our apt. is air conditioned which surely helps but we seldom go outside now.
Tell Khalid we are very proud of his typewriting and his English. It was so good to hear from 112 Mr. & Mrs. Herbert S. Marcus 2421 N.E. 36 Street Lighthouse Point, FL 33064

My darling daughter:
I want to inform you that Mother is now in the hospital with a malignancy and tomorrow she will be operated on and we will know more. However the prognosis does give little reason for optimism. They found I am her only hope, so thank you and be prepared for the worst. Mother is at the hospital’s comfortable and pretty area today. Pray, and may your prayers be answered.
Dearest love to all Daddy 113 Just wanted you to know that after August 3rd I’ll finally be back in Jersey at: 126 Dehart Place, Apt. 312 Elizabeth, N.J. 07202
Phone will be listed with information as of the 3rd.
Would love to hear from you -

Dear Aunt Peggy:
I just received your most recent letter which was forwarded to me from Florida. With regard to the photographs you requested, I do have a camera but you must understand that generally I use it to take pictures of other people, i.e. I have very few if any recent pictures of myself. I do promise that, at the very latest, I’ll manage to have some taken in Florida when the entire family is together for Thanksgiving.
My new address is above—it’s a rather large apartment building and so the precise apartment number is correct in order to insure my receiving any letters you may send. IMPORTANT
I’ll be moving in less than three weeks—all of a sudden things are beginning to happen very quickly it seems. I really can’t write now—I’m extremely busy but I did want you to have my address and I have hopes that you’ll write during the month of August—it would be nice to get some friendly mail when I’m in a new, strange environment.
Love to your whole family and, of course, to you as well. debi
P.S. I must take issue with your statement that “being single and childless may mean loneliness as you grow much older”. Please do not assume that either Sue or I intend to live out our lives just as we do now—getting married and having children remain options for us both which may be exercised regardless of what age we are!!

Dear Aunt Peggy:
I can scarcely believe that it has been over two months since I received your last letter!! The older I get, the more quickly time seems to pass. First of all, I want to thank you for having had someone send me Suzanne Haneef’s book—unfortunately, because until this past Monday I’ve been extremely busy completing work on my Master’s, I haven’t had any time to spend on that, or any other book. However, I now have an entire summer ahead of me and I’ll not even be working for a portion of it and I certainly plan to devote to the book the serious attention it deserves. In answer to your question—no, I do not personally know any Muslims in Dorchester. However, that’s only because I haven’t met any—they are certainly there and I would imagine they live there in substantial numbers. Given the racial and ethnic makeup of my community, I would bet that most, if not all of them are black. The vast majority of the white community is made up of working class people of Irish backgrounds and they seem to feel their Catholic upbringing strongly.
As I mentioned above, I believe I have completed work on my graduate degree. I took a seven and a half hour exam this past Monday (!!!) and, if I passed it, I should be able to receive my diploma by the end of the summer. Although I certainly don’t need a Master’s in Legal Studies now that I’ve decided to attend law school, I’ll be extremely happy to have it anyway since it’s something to fall back on if I don’t finish law school for some reason and the work which I’ve done in the process of making law school easier than it seems to be for most people.
Now that I have no studying to do, I’m ready to begin the process of searching for a place to live in the Newark, New Jersey area. I’ve arranged a short trip for the coming weekend and, thankfully, it will be a combined pleasure/business trip. Sue is visiting my parents this week in Connecticut where she’s an assistant director for another couple of weeks. Therefore, tomorrow I’m driving down to Connecticut for one of the rare evenings when my entire immediate family will be together. (It never ceases to amaze and sometimes disappoint me that our small family manages to be in the same place at the same time so infrequently.) The following morning, Sue will be accompanying me to New Jersey and we’ll spend the entire day exploring various towns and neighborhoods and, hopefully, looking at apartments advertised in Plainfield (where I still have very strong roots) at the home of an extremely old friend of mine. We’re having dinner with another close friend from New York and another who happens to be in the area from San Francisco). It should be something of a high school reunion!! We’ve left the remainder of the weekend open and intend to be flexible—we’ll stay in New Jersey if we haven’t found me an apartment (which seems likely given that the rental market is extremely tight) or if we’ve been lucky we’ll drive up to Boston where Sue will be spending the next entire week.
I took a week’s vacation about a month ago and visited Sue in New Orleans. It was a real vacation, meaning that I totally relaxed and had a wonderful time. I spent one day with Sue at her school meeting her students and observing her teach—she’s incredibly patient and so creative. And her pupils are without exception adorable. First graders are so wonderful—their naivete about everything keeps me constantly smiling. The rest of my time in New Or115 leans was spent going to a huge jazz festival (with incredible music and food to feed the entire world), going to the opening of the World’s Fair, shopping, touring the various museums, and meeting several of Sue’s friends, whom I liked. It was exactly the kind of week I needed—a slow pace, no commitments. New Orleans is truly a wonderful city—so many different kinds of people and a Southern mentality so different from what I’m accustomed to in the Northeast. Because of the still-strong French influence there, I often felt as though I were in a foreign country instead of in the United States. Since Sue’s been there I’ve managed to get down there once a year and I’d love to continue to do so but I fear that with law school and my lack of income I probably won’t make it down there for several years.
My past letters to you were on a more intellectual level than this one is—I fear that this one is overly “chatty”. Please forgive me but I’ve just put in an eight-hour day working and my mind runs more to the trivial daily goings on than to the perhaps more important things in life. I did, however, want to get a letter out to you before I get too caught up with moving and then law school.
I loved the pictures you sent—any more which you want to send will be appreciated. At this point, no one in the family has pictures of either Sue or me since we were in junior high school. Perhaps this weekend we’ll take some—not only you, but your parents, would like it.
Please give my love to your entire family and write when you can.
Love,
d.b.o.

Darling Peggy:
This is with a heart laden with so much sorrow that Mother passed away on Wednesday. She had undergone much suffering, but we can regard it as a blessing that she is now resting in peace.
Each of us enjoyed so deeply, happily lives and have two fine daughters for whom we regard with deep pride.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, 30th.
Betty is with me, a source of great strength and comfort.
Mother has left a legacy of love for you, dear, and for your children.
I hope you had a good time. I think it was the better way of enjoying this book.
Love,
Fay Betty joins in sending profound love and great joy for a robber and so on. I know that you have been through so much in your memory. With best love to you, the folks and the children.
Daddy D Dear Peggy —
I was very glad to receive your letter and appreciated your frankness. Someday I hope to visit you in Lahore, but who knows when that will be, and in the meantime, we have only communication by mail — at which you are far better than I!! While I like my new job, it’s quite exhausting and I have little privacy to write personal letters (Today the “boss” is taking a holiday so I’m taking the time.) I did send a $15 check to Frances Iclend in mid-November and have offered to send her whatever else is due. The books mean so very much to you & I’m happy to help make it possible for you to receive them. Are you doing any writing (professionally now?) Your typewriter is lovely. Debi cooked the Thanksgiving Turkey this year (She loves to cook!) so the four of us were together there. Next year we’ll have to do something different, so that Mother & Dad aren’t left alone on Thanksgiving or their birthdays & so that Sue doesn’t spend Christmas/her birthday by herself. If money & time were no object, this would be easy.

dear -
This is a “Happy Birthday” letter being written almost a week before the date, because mail schedules are so unreliable. I’m aware that you don’t actually celebrate occasions like this in Pakistan, but you must like being remembered because you never fail to remind me! (I would remember anyway!) We’re so happy for you that everything is going well in your household. For the new bride and groom and for the children still in school…. All your good news has been particularly welcome lately, since mother’s illness. I do hope you received the letter I wrote shortly after I arrived home from Florida. Mother was progressing nicely then but was still in the hospital. Now she’s home & her progress continues. A therapist comes in several times a week & the doctor is encouraging her to go out to church and to play bridge. She and Daddy take a short walk together every day. They are truly remarkable people - you and I share a marvelous inheritance, Debi and Sue will be visiting with us over Memorial Day week end - 121 Mrs. W.P. Peggy -
I’ve just received your letter about your Family & how anxious you must be to hear more about mother’s condition. This is to re-assure you that she is coming along just fine. The doctor called it a ‘slight’ stroke, & although anything of this kind is a terrible shock, it has only been two and a half weeks since it happened & she is rallying beautifully. Her mind was not at all affected. At first there was moderate paralysis on the left side of the face, her left shoulder & hip. These seem to be easing with time and with therapy; only her hands are weak, particularly since she developed arthritis in her right hand. (The good one!) While in the hospital, so she may have difficulty writing to you, for a while.
As Daddy no doubt wrote, I spent some time down there the first week - both of them were in good spirits & Mother particularly managed to find humor in even the worst situations. There is a woman coming in to help with cleaning & cooking for two hours I Betty & Walter Herz 245-05 Hamilton Avenue Stamford, CT 06902

The summer has really flown by - I do hope the weather hasn’t been too unpleasant for you and that you’ve been kept busy with your books and the family. Thank you so much for the wedding picture of Sa’adia and her husband that you sent me - they make a handsome couple & I hope they’ll always be happy. I haven’t attended to any book ordering for you for some time now. Walter’s division at the publishing firm he was working for was dissolved & he had to look for another position. This situation made me feel very insecure temporarily and I wrote as few checks as possible. Now, however, things are fine again. Walter has a job in New Jersey (remember we moved to CT. because of the other job?), and in spite of commuting 2 hours every day, he’s very happy… so I am, too. On April 28th I sent a check to Traver’s Book Store for $17 at your request. There have been no payments on my part since then, so do make B. Herz 245-05 Hamilton Ave Stamford, CT. 06902

I am certainly not a far better correspondent these days! I work in a small office and he likes to keep me busy. By the time I get home at night I am too weary to compose a letter, as I’m sure you can understand. However, he is out of the office for a few minutes… children is always most welcome, and those pictures! You have a very beautiful grandchild, as I’m sure everyone must feel. You look fine - not at all the way you describe yourself when you write (where’s the gray hair?) Debi & Sue saw the pictures, too. When they visited this past weekend Sue was a bridesmaid at a wedding in Greenwich (college classmate) & Debi re-used a coat she had. A surprisingly fierce snowstorm for this time of year. Debi had to abandon her car outside of Boston & reached us almost 24 hours late. She did arrive, though. To fix me a post-birthday dinner as she had promised. A spinach-cheese quiche, asparagus, huge tossed salad & strawberry ice cream - marvelous. (She does not enjoy this busy kind of thing but it’ll be going down to New Orleans in May.) I will have four days to talk the world over. Mother & Dad have just signed another lease for their apartment but are now considering the idea of a retirement 129 Mrs. W.P. Herz

home after that. I’m sure you’re aware that neither of them could manage alone - and since Walter and I are planning to move back to New Jersey to be closer to his job, neither would be at all happy with us. Surely hope this is never a problem but it seems inevitable. I’m happy to order the books for you but cannot part with any pictures. The girls will want them eventually. I’ll try to write again before May 23rd. Meanwhile, much love From Betty 130 Peggy - June 14th
I hope you’re not suffering too much the heat - and that you don’t have any electric power failures!! Our summer has been in the 90’s which is dreadful enough… yours must be much worse. Thanks so much for the recent picture. We don’t own a camera which is why we could reciprocate.
We’re in the midst of negotiations for the sale of our condominium (that’s an apartment which is bought - not rented) IF it goes through we’ll be moving back to New Jersey (a different area though) about August 7th). This move will be quite an expensive one for us & I’m going to ask you not to send any bills for me to pay until we’re settled in the Fall.
I looked in my check book and found that I’ve paid Frances Kleenoff $35 on Feb. 25th, $37 on April 2nd and $25 on May 5th. I called her & she explained that she sometimes has trouble locating books for you, and thus quite a bit of time goes by. However, she assured me that you would eventually get every book ordered. Please resubmit the other bills to me in about three or four months. Mother & Dad sound fine, Although they’ve been worried lately 131 B. Herz

Your letter of Feb. 18th just arrived. I do hope that in the meantime, you have heard from other members of the Family about mother’s condition. Rest assured that Mother is in very little or no pain. She is at home with Daddy and is being cared for by a nurse’s aide and the hospice organization (are you familiar with hospice? they are wonderful people who come into the home several times a week to help with light household chores, shopping, etc., and keep watch on the patient’s medication to avoid any discomfort). The aide does the cooking, and Daddy says she’s good. Do write to Mother - she adores letters; tell her how much you love her & give news of the Family. I call twice a week and she comes to the phone each time. As far as Daddy is concerned he will not want to live without mother; in the meantime, he wants to stay on in their apartment in Florida and 133 he will have help for cooking, shopping, etc. He has thought of coming North so there will be little I can do aside from staying with him for a short time. Aunt Helen, Jim, Judy, Aunt Dolly, Mary, Anne & Debi & Sue have all been most attentive; Helen too. We will keep in touch with you and send our love to you all. Betty 134 May 14 ‘53
Peggy -
I just received your nice newsy letter. I am hastening to answer with the hope that you’ll be receiving this before your birthday on the 23rd. Walter, Debi, Sue and I send our very best loving wishes to you for this year and always… You are NOT an ‘old lady’ at 51… what would that make me!?!
Daddy is doing far better than I expected… of course he is grieving and gets teary when he speaks to me on the phone - but there are moments now when he forgets his grief and can genuinely enjoy the company of others. I worried so about him at first and was looking for a suitable place up here - Then realized that the longer he can remain independent and in control of his own life, the better OFF he’d be. In addition, there would be the problem of climate; our cold winters could be dangerous for him. Familiar people and surroundings are very important for him now.
Your children sound grand, Dad loves hearing from them - particularly the boys. (Incidentally, Jim’s visit was a big success. He is now 48, as was Uncle Ernest when he died; he treated Dad like a surrogate father). Sue plans to write to Sa’alasia; perhaps she already has, Debi is busy studying for exams. In a few weeks she will have completed her first week of law school & life.

Dad has suggested that we now address you as Maryam, and not Peggy, since that is the name you’re called by at home. Do you prefer it this way? Walter’s sister at the age of 60+ changed her name legally to Eve from Erica!! We’re having a bit of trouble with this after all these years. Walter resolves the “problem” by addressing her as “Sis”.
Walt went to the post office this morning to pick up your certified letter. Thank you so much for sending us those lovely pictures of yourself - Khan Sahib and the Family babies you are all very beautiful. Dad has indeed received the pictures and put them in his Family album. We’re especially happy that you had a good visit with Sa’adia in October, as we had the impression that you were not pleased with your relationship. Dad was thrilled by the letters from all your children and very proud of their English.

Dear Pam,
Martin Luther King’s birthday has been declared a national holiday today, so I have a day off from work and am glad to have the opportunity to write to you. I do hope that you and your family are all well and happy. We think of you often. I know how concerned you are about Dad’s welfare and want to assure you that he’s doing just fine. He’s planning to come north for Debi’s wedding on June 21st… and of course we all pray this will be possible. (You asked for a copy of his will. He has discussed it with us, but it’s locked in his safe deposit box in Florida. He’d be glad to answer any specific questions you might have in mind). Debi’s fiance is 31 (6 months younger than she); he grew up in Arizona and in Washington, D.C.; his father is a radiologist in Boise, Idaho - This is probably why he wanted to go to medical school. He’s a soft-spoken, charming, reserved young man; Walter and I have grown extremely fond of him and think he’ll make a warm, devoted husband. So of course we’re very happy for Debi! If Revere + Bob, Jim + Ceil, Mary + Bill, Aunt Dotty + Walter’s family from California and Greg’s family from Idaho (which includes a great grandmother) can all come together for the wedding, it’ll be a very memorable occasion. Meanwhile, Sue may have a two-year teaching position in Brazil - more about that 139 in my next letter…. the Chicago Book Mart returned my check for “The Awakening Valley,” saying that they had no previous request from you to locate that book. I am puzzled by this…. do you want them to look for it, or had you asked another search service?

- has been asking me each time we talk on the phone (twice a week) - whether we had any news from you. He needs your letters - and when the children can write to him it makes him very happy. You’ve probably already answered his latest letter (which I hope was legible!); he wrote to you 2 pages about himself and his financial situation - evidently this took a lot of effort and emotional energy. I told him that I would write to you and emphasize the importance of your correspondence. He’s so pleased that you and I have been keeping in touch. Yesterday was the anniversary of Mother’s death. Dad has survived the year better than any of us would ever have dreamed! Walter spent last week end with him and felt very good about their visit. We’re so glad you received and enjoyed wedding pictures - It must have been very interesting for you to see how we all have changed over the years. How did Daddy look to you? He seems to be really fine physically and mentally in his current condition, but periodically he does sound depressed. We talk for at least half an hour twice a week on the telephone, which is almost as good as visiting; Walter and I have plane tickets to visit him the first weekend in December. Mother & Dad would have been married for 61 yrs on Oct 26; Mother would have been 85 on Nov. 29th & Dad will be 92 on Dec. 8th. This is a difficult time of year for him & he’s particularly sensitive. Your last letter had an upsetting effect - I believe he told me that you felt lovely with the children out of the house and when you finish your writing assignments, I would tell him when you’re not happy because it makes him so unhappy. As you wrote in your last letter to me - “let’s brighten his mood and cheer him up.”
Sue enjoys adventure and being in a foreign country, so although the language is difficult for her, it’s an exciting rewarding experience. She says that the Brazilian children know more English than the little black children she taught in New Orleans. I have a new job - secretary to the administrator of a retirement home for women. So far (I started on Sept 2nd) it has been quite pleasant. Debi & Greg are very happy together and working hard - she at law school & he at the hospital. We all send you love. P.S. How is Khalid? & your family. Much love - Betty 1 February 6, 1981
[Thank] you so much for the lovely pictures!! [You look] young and thin, and I can’t see any lies!! The family picture is particularly lovely, and I shall take it to Florida next week to show Dad in case he hasn’t seen it; Judging from your passport photo, your appearance hasn’t changed much in the past 20+ years! I must get passport photos taken, too, as we want to visit Sue in Brazil next summer. She has just finished a two-month Christmas vacation in Bolivia and Peru (it’s summer there), has a couple of weeks of school and then more vacation at Carnival time. This is all a great deal of fun and a good experience for her, but she likes to feel “needed” as she was with the poor black children in New Orleans and is not now with the children of wealthy Brazilians. She may want to teach in an inner city Washington, D.C. school when she comes back, if she can get a position there. For the past week Dad has been in the infirmary at St. Andrews so you may not get mail from him for a while. He had a series of falls and they’re trying to find out the cause. He hates the infirmary and is very anxious to get back to his room, but I’m hoping to be able to stay there when I go down next week and will try to see his doctor. He feels fine but tires easily which is why you may not have received a letter. Nothing to worry about; it’s old age taking its toll.

Debi and Greg are a very loving couple. She is doing very well in her law studies but is tired of going to school and anxious to get going with her career. I am thinking of you as your birthday approaches and sending our best wishes for contentment, happiness and good health in the coming year. Fifty-three seems so wonderfully young to me as 60 gets closer. Walter is 62 - I have no idea how old your husband is (he’s very handsome, judging from the pictures you’ve sent!). Did I tell you that I work in a retirement home for women? The average age here is 88 - older than mother would have been. There are a lot of memory problems (a lady just came into my office and asked what day it was), but they are fantastically healthy both mentally and physically. Their lives have no stress here (they get three meals a day; room cleaned once a week; laundry done, etc.) and a dietician supervises their diets. However, all purpose has gone from their lives; I wouldn’t want to live here, but it’s satisfying work for me, at this time. I gave all the messages in your last letter to Dad, he was so pleased that you all renewed your American passports. Did Haider pass his examinations? Dad has great hopes for him and has a dream that he’ll come to the States some day. To Maryam,
It’s been too long since my last letter to you - much has happened & it isn’t always easy for me to write. However, I do know how much the mail means to you…. Dad eagerly awaits mail from you, but do try not to write anything upsetting. He was so very relieved to hear that Haider came back safe and sound from Afghanistan! If only Khalid could continue his studies in the States, nothing would make him happier.
Are you suffering very much from the drought? We read of the effects in northern India, but the NY Times doesn’t mention Pakistan in this regard.
Our trip to Brazil was most satisfactory, particularly because we were seeing Sue & visiting her school, meeting some of her co-workers, etc., etc. Salvador is in a rather poor section of the country; most of the people are of African descent although they don’t look like our black people. Their religion is a variety of witchcraft … They have many gods (god of the ocean - a woman - seems to be most popular). It’s a very relaxed and disorganized country; for example, if a bus doesn’t come for a couple of hours no one complains because “That’s just the way things are!” The only law that is enforced (No one pays attention to traffic laws) is voting; the people all seemed to be very young, & Sue said there are a lot of middle-aged & elderly whom v no one ever sees except at election time. Their food is cooked in palm & coconut oil - all saturated fats - so I imagine there are some deaths due to strokes & heart attacks. Very interesting but I wouldn’t want to live there. We got back to find that Walter’s job was coming to an end. Age discrimination. He’s trying to set up his own office now in order to do freelance work, but we’ll have to watch our pennies at least for awhile. We both send you much love,

We’ve just arrived home from North Carolina to find a letter from you as well as some of your book reviews, which I’ve already scanned & find extremely well-written (not a surprise) and which Walt and I are eager to read more of closely. Am hastening to write this in order to send you Jim & Judy’s addresses. They would certainly appreciate hearing from you. I’m sure you’ll be mentioning how much I enjoyed meeting their children and how lovely the memorial service was. What a shame that it takes a funeral to bring us all together! Walt will try to do whatever he can ask about your pictures but please do be patient since he has a lot on his mind right now - do hope it won’t be too expensive.
Now that we’re back from our journey south, I’ll give Khalid & Haider a call and see if we can visit them soon in a week or so. Dad is urging us to do this so that we can see how they’re living and give him a report. He’s afraid that they’re not thinking enough about education, even though I’ve told B. Additional message area: him that Rutgers University + Middlesex County College are close by. (Khalid calls me). We did like the slower pace of life and the lower cost of living in Durham, so this is in our plans for the future. Did you ever miss New York City? I don’t think I would. Know you’re busy getting the house ready for the upcoming marriage, so just write when you can. P.S. Thanks for the picture! Much love to you + the family, Bethel Lahore, 1988
Now the wedding of Khan Sahib’s eldest has taken place, and we are anxious for the details. Who performed the ceremony? How old are the newly-weds? Do you know them well? Do you enjoy celebrations like this? (I remember that you did not care for social functions when you were younger).
April 1st was Good Friday + I took advantage of the holiday from work to go along with Walter and Debi to visit Khalid and Haider. They are living with their cousin about 45 min. away from our home in a brand new condominium. There’s a nice kitchen, bath and living room downstairs; two bedrooms and a large bathroom on the second floor, furniture there. Everything from Pakistan has not arrived yet, so I think the boys are sleeping in the living room. They each have cars now (we saw Haider’s and it looks to be in good shape; Khalid got his the next week); evidently Khalid had trouble with parallel parking (so did I—40 years ago!) and can’t get his license just yet, but it’s good to know that Haider no longer has to ride his bike 25 miles to get to his job. We met Mr. Booki (their cousin) who had disapproved of their living in Brooklyn + had wanted them to live with him since he is divorced + alone. He feels the importance of their getting a good education and learning to speak English well; we felt so very pleased that he is pointing them in the right direction. All of this has been reported to Dad and has made him happy;… incidentally, B. Herz 205 Pond Terrace Wash. Township NJ 07675

has passed his driving test! I think it’s remarkable that both Khalid and Haider were able to pass the written test - it’s difficult, even if you’re expert with the language.
I’m glad the wedding went well … life must seem quiet now that it’s over. We had no luck at all with our house sale, but fortunately, we are not in a rush. Sue will be coming home in a month! We all send you and the family much, much love - Bethel Oct. 18, 1988
Indeed the mail is slow - your letter dated September 13th arrived just a few days ago; it’s logical that Haider makes telephone calls to you. Evidently neither Haider nor Khalid write many letters; it would be good practice for them to write to you in English. …. (continued 10/24: ) Sorry for the interruption. This has been a fiercely busy week, and I didn’t get a chance to complete my letter to you. In the meantime, Khalid has called twice - once just to chat and then to invite us to visit. Unfortunately, he wanted us to come yesterday BUT we were going to a wedding. What an experience!! It was held at a Conservative temple and no expense was saved - lots of food, drink, noise and show. Too much for our taste… and it took the whole day (11-6!). Khalid will let us know if this coming Saturday will be convenient for them.
Did I tell you that both Walter and I will be going to visit Dad in November? I’m not to let more than six months elapse between visits. He tells me that you need cataract operations and I just hope that you inherit his good fortune. He had an implant - are you? Can you believe that he hardly needs his glasses… after all these years!! He told me recently that he’s sorry his parents 165 B. Herz 205 Pond Tear. Wash. Township NJ 07675

I so seldom write letters these days (it’s much easier to type on the computer), so please excuse my shaky scribbling. The pictures you’ve sent me have all been much appreciated - not only by me but also by Debi and Sue to whom I’ve given them for safekeeping. Masooma has really grown up; she and Hymagan are adorable. Haider sent me a voice mail on the computer and his children (mostly the older one) spoke in answer to some questions he asked - a real treat! Your sons have been very attentive. Khalid and I spoke on the telephone for about an hour a week or so ago. It was so good to hear his voice again; I do hope his wife can join him before too long. We had a long discussion about Pakistan’s political situation and its hopes for the future. Did you watch Clinton’s speech on CNN? A nuclear war with India is the big fear here.
Judy called me on Sunday as she was about to leave for Chicago. Her daughter Lynn is expecting her second child early in April. Judy loves being a grandmother!! She has been very interested in exploring the history of the Marcos family and enjoys telling me about our grandparents and Daddy’s boyhood. She has recordings of interviews she did with him and

That you will know that we are thinking of you, I’m writing to you today on the occasion of your 56th birthday (since I’m ahead of you in years, you will always seem young to me !). We were so glad to receive the letter you wrote on April 23rd; Khalid mentioned a post office strike - in any case, it took almost a month to reach us! We are of course most eager to read your autobiography - who are the people you are concerned about offending? Would they be likely to read it?
Khalid keeps in touch with me … and with Daddy too. Evidently Haider is busy with his new store in Bound Brook (this town is next door to Somerville, our first residence in New Jersey !). Khalid tells me that Haider is anxious to bring his wife to the U.S. and needs help. Both your boys should do well - they are very bright and determined young men!
Sue is now living with a teacher-friend and seems to be doing well, although some of her medicine makes her sleepy during the day. We’re hoping that she’ll be able to go back to teaching in the Fall. Meanwhile, Debi and Greg are getting ready to move to Ohio in July. They’ll be staying with us for a while in June in order to make final arrangements. We’ll be moving from the lovely apartment we’re in now to a very nice condominium some time in September. After that Walter and I want to visit Dad in Florida - Can you believe he’ll be 95 this year?! I have a job now, working at a University hospital as secretary/receptionist for a clinical trials research group on AIDS. Has this dreadful disease reached Pakistan? It’s spreading wildly here among homosexuals and drug users; no real cure is on the horizon, but alot of money & effort is being spent on the pursuit. I’m sorry you have the nuisance of a cataract operation to look forward to, but it will undoubtedly improve your eyesight. Walter and I send you & all the Family much love - Betty

In your last letter you mentioned that cataract operation had been postponed; been about six weeks since you wrote. I am wondering if it’s all over by now. Khalid and Haider called on Sunday night and gave me the impression that you were staying in the hospital a few days because these you would have air-conditioning. In any case, I do hope it’s been successful and that you will find your eyesight improved.
Dad has been very concerned about Khalid and Haider - sometimes I think overly so; his main concern is their education, because without a college degree it’ll be almost impossible to rise out of security guard positions. Khalid visited Mary a week ago Saturday and took along the movie of the wedding. She adored having him and told me that she’s eager to have him back when her children are there. He met Aunt Dottie and charmed her too!
Has Dad written that he’s planning to come up to Cincinnati the middle of August and stay for a week? Because both Sue and Debi are nearby he feels it’s the only way he can get to see all of us. He hasn’t travelled in quite a few years… but why not?
Meanwhile Sue + her friend are in Scotland for 3 weeks and Debi and Greg are getting settled in their new home. Their address: 605 Windy Hill Hamilton, Ohio

Sue returned from her two-year stint in Brazil last month; within her first week back she had leased and furnished an apartment in Cincinnati and had the promise of a teaching job. She’ll be instructing Spanish in the early elementary grades. She has also spent a week in the wilds of Minnesota, on a canoe!! Wonderful to have such energy. I asked Khalid to write to you in English as time passes. This will become easier. We all send love to you and the Family,

Kavejam -
A week from today, Dad will be 95. Hard to believe, isn’t it?! I remember his 50th birthday as a rather sad occasion; he did not know then that he had much longer to live. Health is constantly on his mind now. We just pray that when it comes, it takes over quickly with none of the lingering (e.g. a stroke). That he so dreads. He seems to be in fine shape physically and mentally 100% alert! Jim Hochheimer called this morning to tell us that Judey has had a relapse and is quite depressed. She’s at home, so I’ll be giving her a call over the weekend. Judey is resistant to medication, but she probably could benefit from lithium to prevent mood swings. Because Jim’s news was upsetting, I forgot to ask about his trip to Larchmont with Khalid. I know they had a fine time together; they’re both so interested in family relationships and do much to hold us together. Khalid did tell me that he visited Helene and Grace Sinai (the Schlieders died some years ago & Kitty Steinam’s death was about a year ago) … wish I could have gone along! Now I’m waiting to hear about his Thanksgiving with Mary and Bill’s family. When will Haider be returning? I understand your feelings, but he will always be making trips to Pakistan to see you, no matter what he decides. Sue has been reading your book; it fascinates her, I know; I’ll pass along to you any specific comments.

Please be patient about the wedding picture reproductions. Walt will find out the cost and - if not prohibitive - will get them made for you. Debi and Sue were both with us for Thanksgiving and shared preparation of the traditional turkey dinner. Nicci, Debi’s 11 yr old stepdaughter, was a big help, too. She’s a delightful child and is a joy to Debi. Did I tell you that we have a puppy? We all send much love to you and the Family - Betty
© USPS 1988 Dear Aslam,
This letter is to acknowledge receipt of yours, which is coming up in a few weeks. I hope it finds you happy and healthy and content with your daily life. Khalid told me that your living quarters on the roof have been completed. Do give me details when you write (are they air-conditioned? I wonder; you have such high temperatures in the summer!). How is your book (2nd part of autobiography) progressing? Dad heard from Khalid just the other evening; he sounded fine and said he had moved to another town in New Jersey. Since Dad didn’t write it down, will you please let me know his new address? I haven’t heard from him in a while and don’t want to lose touch. He and Haider have very busy lives, and I don’t expect them to do all the communicating.
It will be 39 years ago tomorrow since I went and my wedding pictures were taken. Last night Debi and Greg and Nicci had us over for dinner… and tomorrow night we’ll be Sue’s guests. I could think of a nicer celebration for us this year. Debi heard yesterday that she passed the Ohio Bar exam; now she’s eligible to practice law in both New Jersey and Ohio, and will be actively looking for a job. She and Greg are hoping to be able to adopt Nicci, who will be 12 in July and is a very delightful child. Sue is looking forward to summer vacation now. School will be over for the year the first week in June; she and the baby she Betty and Walter Herz 2316 Dana Avenue Cincinnati, Ohio 45206

Dear Maryam,
I am really sorry that it has taken me so long to write, but I have traveled a great deal lately and it took six weeks to arrive. I was distressed to hear from you when we finally connected that you’ve been sad and frustrated because you haven’t heard from us. About three weeks ago Walter mailed the duplicates of the wedding pictures you requested. I do hope that they arrived safe.
Meanwhile let me assure you that Dad is fine. I could not believe he was calling me on the telephone twice a week and he keeps me up-to-date on his thoughts and doings (he’s not weak, he has three luncheon engagements). He worked last night on his correspondence and Khan Saleh tried to call him but you did not reach him. He better be thankful but would rather receive your letters. Judy seems to have benefited from the telephone. I was worried too about Dad - she told me sure enough last week she spent three days in Boca Raton and took him out for meals. Both of them had a grand time; her visit was a real “shot in the arm.” I’ll be going down for four days in March, so, you know he has not been neglected.

I was so happy to receive your letter and your new address is:
St. Andrews Estates - PC unit 60 South Verde Trail
PC stands for Personal Care. It’s a facility for those who need some help in bathing, feeding themselves, etc., but who have no need for nursing care. Dad has made a remarkable recovery! Everyone tells him that, particularly considering his age; and it makes him very proud. Indeed, he is very successful at mastering Old Age - more so perhaps than at any other time in his life (except marriage). He carries a cane but doesn’t use it except when the terrain is uneven. Only his use of his hands has retrogressed, & he has some trouble with eating his food and with writing. We had a wonderful visit in September; he took me out to a restaurant three times. Khalid’s visit followed mine. He told Dad about his financial worries and that he misses Haider; he knows that he acted like “Big Brother” to Haider and that he may have given him too much advice. We all hope that Haider will return; meanwhile, I wish I could be of more help to Khalid. Distance makes for…

Maryam -
Many apologies - I had no idea it had been so long since my last letter to you! It was good to receive your letter today and to be reminded, Dad reminds me parts of things that you write to him, so I always feel in touch with you.
Congratulations on your recent writing assignments … I feel very proud that my sister was given a special request from the Pakistan government! Do Haider and Khalid know?
Khalid called here, a week or so ago; unfortunately, I wasn’t home, but he and Walter had a long chat. He had heard from Haider in Paris but did not know his address. Apparently, Khalid is fine and is enjoying his studies … he deserves to do well! I remember now that they both had birthdays in January … ages 23 & 24?
Dad’s handwriting may be shaky, but let me assure you that this is not true of his mind. We continue our twice a week telephone calls and discuss world affairs (especially the Gulf situation) as well as family matters & Jim has been of particular concern to us lately; he’s thinking seriously of divorcing Ceil and marrying a woman he’s known in Rochester for about 5 years. Walter saw him in Albany this week.

© USPS 1988 186 Dearest Maryam,
Thank you so much for sending the pictures taken at Mascomas 6th birthday party. She is a beautiful child (as is her mother). Debi and Sue will each get one. They are both very interested in you and family life in Pakistan.
Sue will be 45 (!) tomorrow, Christmas Eve, and Debi will be celebrating her 47th birthday on Wednesday. I still refer to them as my “children” or “the girls” and find it hard to believe so many years have gone by.
We’re glad the national election here is over and will support G.W. Bush, even if we don’t agree with his policies. He doesn’t appear to be interested in Foreign affairs, but of course he’ll have to contend with them. Clinton made some serious mistakes with his personal life; however, he will be missed by many people.
I do hope Khalid’s wife has arrived in the U.S. and that he or Haider will be calling me soon. I sent them an e-mail and told them that Walter and I plan to spend our 50th anniversary in New York and that we would so enjoy seeing them while we’re there. Do you remember our wedding at Aunt Helen’s home in Harichmont? I was so nervous at being the center of attention that my flowers were shaking. I’ve completely lost touch with Helene and with Carol, but do expect that Jude, Jim, Maeve and Aunt Dottie

197 Dearest Maryam,
You didn’t receive my letter, and I never received yours with the pictures … what can I say, except that I’m so glad you had such a nice 65th birthday. Why did I have the impression that Pakistani Muslims did not celebrate birthdays?!!
Our church is hosting a Kosova Family! They’re due to arrive from Macedonia this afternoon, which makes for big excitement. Walt is on the Welcoming Committee and will probably be on local TV tonight. The church keeps both of us pretty busy. Walt is more into the National Organization, and I’m co-chair of the Caring Committee, which helps the minister in visits to the sick, sends cards to bereaved families, arranges memorial services, etc. Sometimes it’s depressing, but over all, it’s rewarding. This week now, which is perfect, IF Debi and Sue had children, I’m sure our lives would be quite different. Judy will be 60 in November and Jim has suggested a Family get-together. They seem to be very content with their lives as are Debi and Sue. Debi’s divorce went through last week. She’s living by herself in a small house she bought with the settlement money. Her job is fulfilling & she has Dearest Maryam,
Indeed we did receive your book views - Thanks for sending them. We do not always agree with your point of view (e.g. re evolution) but we appreciate your clear and interesting writing style and your ability to express yourself so well. Walt has just had a book published in paperback. It pertains to Unitarian matters and is of interest only otherwise, we would forward a copy to you. I do hope your cold winter will end soon and that Masooma and Masooma have recovered from their colds. Do children fast during Ramadan? A young woman (36) in the office where I work has recently converted from Christianity to Islam. She is observing Ramadan for the first time and is experiencing nausea when she gets up from her chair and walks around. I have told her about you and she would be interested in hearing from you. This is her name and address:

builders finish up their new house, so I have no address or phone no. to give Khalid as yet. Debi and Greg are trying hard to make a go of their marriage but still have some hurdles. Greg’s mother had a wonderful and elaborate Christmas celebration for all of us…. Sue still enjoys her teaching; The class size has been reduced somewhat. We’ve had a lot of snow this week, so a number of schools have been closed. My love to you and all the family, in which Walt joins.
Betty Dearest Maryam,
I received such a sweet, affectionate letter from Margie some time in November. Even though, as you say, her baby is a handful, she sounds very happy with her life. Please give her my special love and tell her how much I appreciated her letter. I’m saving it to show Debi and Sue. Walt and I spent last week (which included Thanksgiving) in the state of Washington visiting his sister and brother-in-law. At the age of 77 Eve has gone into business for herself! She has become interested in magnetic therapy, which is supposed to increase blood circulation and help people with various aches and pains. We purchased several of her products, and will find out whether or not they’re effective. Debi and Greg are working hard at their marriage and continue to go to counseling. They love each other very much & we hope and pray that their efforts are successful. Not having children is part of the difficulty, I’m sure. Sue is trying to manage her class of 30 First graders. Public school class sizes are really too large to do 201 Sept, 26, 1998
I’m truly sorry that I have been such a poor correspondent. I apologize… Were I to deal with the computer; It’s so much easier and quicker with e-mail. Khalid has been marvelous with his calling every two weeks or so. He tells me all the news about you and Marysa, so that I’ve felt really up to date.
The letter I wrote to Marysa was meant for you to read as well. I’m sure I told her about our visit with Jim in Rochester and about meeting his lovely wife, Claudice. They were married on December 8, 1996, which would have been Dad’s 102nd birthday. It seems to be a very happy marriage, which was a joy for us to see. Judy was there, too, looking and acting well. Her divorce from Chuck seems to agree with her.
I have not spoken to Marsee recently but have kept in touch with Aunt Dottie who still drives her car, goes to the Theater and keeps very very active. (She’ll be 94 in January!) Mary and Judy see Carol in New York every so often; evidently she, Martin and her children—both of whom I believe are Professors—are doing just fine. As for Helene, I spoke to her in New York after Dad died and she had earned her college degree (at the age of 70), but I don’t know her present whereabouts. Debi and Greg have had some marriage counseling and, hopefully will 202 April 15th 1998
Margam -
Time flies by so quickly (more so as I get older); I think it’s been a long time since I last wrote to you.
Khalid has called me twice recently - The first time from Haider’s home, I had a nice talk with Shazia and am very eager to meet her. Hopefully, the five of them (Khalid, Haider, Shazia and the two children) will drive out to see us the first week in August. I discussed this with Khalid the second time he called.
Our big family news is sad for Walter and me. Debi and her husband Greg have separated. She seems to prefer being by herself - has rented a lovely apartment and bought new furniture. Greg will undoubtedly get a divorce and remarry quickly. Without children there wasn’t enough to hold them together. This generation is very different from ours; women really prize their independence, (men have a much harder time being single).
Walt and I plan to go to Rochester, New York, in June for our annual church convention. We want to see Jim and meet his wife Claudia and also to meet with Marian - Walt’s brother’s daughter - who, coincidentally, lives next door to Jim! Walt’s sister and 203 Jan.
Margam,
Your latest letter was dated Nov. 17th. It wasn’t received until almost a month later. I do hope this doesn’t take that long to reach you. Your holidays of Ramadan has begun and Khalid should be arriving to see you next week. Please tell him that I’ve missed his phone calls (I have a feeling that he doesn’t like hearing advice from us). We strongly advised him to deposit his $11,000 check when the Florida lawyer told us they were going to close out Dad’s account. In any case, I trust he’ll call after he returns to the States. Haider and Shazia sent us a beautiful Christmas card, for which we were most grateful. They seem to be very happy. We had a quiet holiday. Debi fixed the dinner (she does Xmas and I do Thanksgiving), but Greg was called to the hospital before he could eat. Doctors - and their families - have to be very flexible. Sue prefers to spend the days (her birthday) at home, so we had a visit a few days earlier. She loves her teaching, but it’s tiring and she enjoys vacation. The best part of Christmas is hearing from old 204 Dearest Maryam,
Your letter - written on Oct. 5th - has just arrived!! Wonder why mail takes so long. In any case, I’m glad you reminded me of the time lapse between my letters… This year has flown by much too fast. You asked about the Family! I haven’t heard from Helena since Dad died. She and Bob had planned to spend another year at Cornell, where she was working. Judy and Jim have birthdays coming up, so we’ll be in touch. Jim is very happy with his new wife (Claudia) whom we expect to meet in Rochester next May when we attend the Unitarian’s annual meeting there. Carol is a lost cause; Aunt Raynor did a good job of poisoning her mind against us. Judy does visit her in N.Y. on occasion & tells us of their doings - very successful and prosperous. I call Aunt Dottie every six weeks or so… she’s marvelous (I believe she’s still driving)! If one of Mary’s three children get married, perhaps we’ll be invited to the wedding and will see them all. They are close to Bill’s family, but not to us. Too bad - I really miss Mary.
Khalid has been so good about calling us, last call was about a month ago when he told me he had not cashed his inheritance check. Walt advised him to go to the bank and put it in certificates of deposit.

Dearest Maryam -
I do hope this letter hasn’t taken as long to reach you as the last one did, because I want to thank you so much for sending me the pictures of your adorable grandchildren! Khalid’s baby looks so loveable… do you think there’s any hope of their getting together? A son really needs his father… what a sad situation (Terhance must have a selfish, cruel streak!). Walt has a nephew in California who is pursuing a similar situation legally for custody of his child. He does freelance work at home & we think he has a good chance of winning the case. When I look at those pictures I realize how much I’m missing by not having grandchildren. Debi and Sue will probably be sorry, too, in another seventeen years, but right now they are career-oriented and could not handle child care after a hard day’s work. Since Sue is a first grade teacher, of course she’s with children all day long.
Too bad about your computer; We have just purchased one & are looking for someone to give us lessons. Just think… you and I could E-mail our correspondence!

Masoomam -
Thanks so much for sending the pictures of Masoom and Moyeen. She has sent some, too, of Masoomam - is she not an adorable child!! Your face looks quite thin… have you lost weight?
I feel so badly for you, Sake, that Masoom and Moyeen are considering living in the States, since I know how much you’ll miss them. Aside from Khan Sahib, is there anyone living in your house? Khalid tells me your servants are quite elderly and probably won’t be around very long. According to him, Pakistani politics are so crooked that leaving the country seems very desirable. The man who won the election does not sound better than Bhutto - Tell me what you think.
I know you’re interested in Dad’s “estate” situation. Walt called Florida the other day (Khalid had called, too, a few weeks ago) & was told that we have to wait until after April 15th. That’s when taxes are due. We don’t understand why taxes can’t be filed earlier…. but we’ll have to be content to wait. Hope you won’t be disappointed in the amount of your check - I am honestly not sure how much it will be.
Debi and Greg have just left on a week’s vacation to Jamaica in the Caribbean. They both work very hard.
207 Dearest Maryam,
I do indeed have all your bank information and will let you know and pass a check on to you whenever it arrives. I haven’t contacted the lawyer recently because there were still hospital bills to pay, but plan to call around December 1st. Evidently it takes six months to a year for things like this to get settled… It’ll be six months in a week or so. Whatever amount is left would make any of us rich, but will be welcome!
It’s hard to believe that Masooma is two years old! Do send me a picture of her and also a copy of your passport picture. Debi and Sue would like to see them too. They’re very interested in their Pakistani family. Family news; Aunt Dottie will be 92 in January but she sounds (on the phone) and acts at least 20 years younger. She’s still driving & is planning to attend Anne’s daughter, Margie’s, wedding in Boston next week! She never wanted to live with Mary but they visit frequently. I spoke to Jim on his 60th birthday. He is to be married on Dec. 8th as he had promised Dad. It’ll just be a small wedding, so we’re not invited. His bride Claudia met him through business and sounds lovely, so this is very happy news.
208 Maryam - July 22, 96
Khalid phoned last night to remind me to write … I did post a letter to you after Dad’s memorial service! Forgive me if I neglected you. The service was lovely - just what Dad wanted, the ministers emphasized his love for his family in Pakistan as well as for his family here. He had requested the 23rd Psalm & mention of his Jewish roots & attempt at Ethical Culture before turning to Unitarianism. A bus load of people from St. Andrews attended. Jim & Judy were there as were Margaret and Don, his friends who had moved to Pennsylvania. I was very pleased, as he would have been. Returning to his room after the service was very difficult for me. I had already taken pictures that we wanted & given some to Debi and Sue. I took nothing else, telling the nurses to distribute his belongings to the staff at St. Andrews who had been so kind to him. Maryam, I am so sorry to have to disappoint you about this. I should have remembered that you would want more photos, but it was an emotional experience and I didn’t think. Just yesterday I received a sympathy card from Helena, who is still working at Cornell. She asked 209 July 4, 1996
Dearest Mama,
Thank you so much for your sweet letter expressing sorrow for your grandfather’s death. We feel fortunate that he lived to be as old as he did. I’m so very glad that you had the opportunity to get acquainted with him. I didn’t really get to know him until after your grandmother died ten years ago. We talked on the telephone twice a week and I made trips to Florida four times a year so that we could visit in person. He was particularly interested in his Pakistani family - always asking if I’d heard from your mother or your brothers. Both Khalid and Haidar were very attentive; he was very appreciative of this. His death was a blessing for him - believe me. His body had weakened; he would have been miserable if he had been confined to a wheelchair.
Please give your mother my Maryam,
Walter and I are making plans to visit Dad in December for his 101st! I realize that I haven’t written to you since my last visit to Florida in August. It’s good that you are now writing to him directly. He loves to receive mail from you!! On Saturday he told me he misses Khalid and Haider’s calls. Do remind them when you’re in contact. The family is of greatest importance to him now, a word to the wise! Don’t tell him if you feel you’re overweight - he worries about that.
Thank you for sending Masooma’s picture. She looks very huggable - give her a special hug and kisses from Great Aunt Betty. Has Sa’adia’s 6th arrived? A boy?
Did CNN carry the O.J. Simpson trial to Pakistan? If so, did you have a reaction to the verdict? We felt the jurors let a guilty man go free, but hope that some lessons can be learned regarding racial divisions, especially in our police department. I’m interested in your opinion about this.
Sue is busy with her 28 first graders. She’s a very conscientious teacher and spends five days a week concentrating on those children. Greg’s father died in late August; he and Debi went to Boise, Idaho for a few days to be with his mother. She’s very lonely, but we feel she’ll be O.K. after December 13, 1995
Maryam -
Walter and I have just returned from a delightful visit with Dad - his 101st birthday! He received over 100 cards from residents at the retirement home, & we spent a good deal of time receiving the congratulatory messages to him. He can see well enough to read, but his eyes tire easily. We went out for dinner to restaurants of his choosing - excellent food but very expensive. (I think he believes we have a lot of money!). I can’t imagine - and neither can he - that he’ll be with us for another birthday; then again I said that last year… and the year before. Jim was to have taken him out the night before we arrived, but he had to make a sudden trip to Atlanta to take care of Judy. Judy had gone into a deep depression after she abruptly stopped her antidepressant medication. I spoke to Jim last night & Judy is O.K. now that she’s back on the medicine.
Khalid paid Dad a visit several weeks ago. Considering what he’s been through, that was a truly good deed; that situation with his finances and the babies is very sad. Did I write you that Haider called me a while ago & this family seems joyous - quite a contrast!
Bosnia is at the center of our news reports now. We think Clinton did the right 194 Dear Mr. M.
I want you to know that we’re thinking of you as your birthday approaches. We send all the best of our wishes!! Dad told me that Khalid will be coming that week… you couldn’t have a better gift!! Dad appreciates his calls so much and so do I. Please tell Khalid that: He does seem to want to live in [city name missing] but this must present marital problems.
How do you foresee their future?
Meanwhile, Dad is considering making a trip to Cincinnati this summer.
Isn’t that amazing at 96½! We’re thinking of mid-August because both Debi & Sue will be home at that time. Sue cancelled her trip to Australia because of illness; she’s on a different medicine, which seems to be working and enables her to continue teaching. Incidentally, the psychiatrist for whom I work thinks highly of Thorazine and prescribes it frequently. Have you experienced side effects?
Next weekend Walt and I will be going to St. Louis to attend Judy’s son Ted’s wedding. He’s marrying a Chinese girl, and there will be a number of guests from Hong Kong. (She and her sons will be there and of course, Jim. (Jim is no longer going with the girls from Rochester and wants very much for Ceil to take him back).
We had a lovely time in New Mexico with Walter’s sister and brother-in-law. The topography of the country is very different from that of the Mid-West - desert-like with warm days and cool nights.
213 July 26, 1991
Dearest Maryam,
You and Dad have been corresponding regularly… and he told me that we spoke together on the telephone last week. So I do get some news of you, but I thought I’d say “hello”. Anyway, Khalid called me. He’s went. I had food cooking on the stove and couldn’t talk long. So I asked him to call back this weekend. I’m really anxious to find out more about your visit with you in Pakistan; Dad told me he’d been ill, but he said he was feeling fine now…. Am curious to know if his wife is willing to be patient enough to wait until his income is enough to support her and perhaps a family. Do you think she’d be happy living in the states? Can she speak English?
How are you doing with your computer? It does have a language of its own. At one time I made some feeble attempts to learn, but…. (I think we get lazy about the new as we get older). Practically all offices here have computer systems. I’m grateful to work in one that doesn’t.
Went and I spent a week in the mountains of North Carolina at a Unitarian church-owned “retreat” - sort of a 214 Feb. 25
Maryam -
Thank you so much for sending the views of Marya’s wedding. They arrived a few days ago (Dad received his in advance!) because the envelope was damaged in the mail as did your letter written on February 6th. Marya is a truly beautiful girl, and Dad and I wish much, much happiness for her. Is her husband a professor? Do tell us a bit about him. Dad was all set to dictate a letter to you over the phone this morning, but I shall forward yours to him so then he’ll reply.
We have had frightful weather this winter as has Khalid in New Jersey. Farhana must long for the warmth in Pakistan! However, last Saturday I got a marvelous birthday present (66—can you believe it?!) and the temperature climbed to near 70°F.
Have you watched the Olympics on television? Dad says the skaters and skiers move too fast, so he turned it off. I’ve enjoyed the figure skating.
Aunt Dottie just called with birthday congratulations. She’ll be 90 next year.

Maryam -
Do you remember 43 years ago today that beautiful evening in Woodmount? When Marya was here we showed her and Khalid our living album. So many of our guests have since died that it makes me sad to look at the pictures. We were celebrating by treating ourselves to a special dinner at a restaurant tonight, where Debi and Greg will be joining us. Sue hosted a dinner for us a week ago. So we are certainly being feasted!
Both Dad and I appreciated your letter and the lovely one from Marya. Will you type her name and address for me when you write again and I shall answer her separately. I went to Florida two weeks ago and spent a fine weekend with Dad. He uses a walker in order to feel secure now when he goes out for a walk by himself. Otherwise, there was no change. Since that “situation” could be yes to play developments. The imminent arrival of Marya’s baby, I am confident will be a source of happiness to both you and her mother. My life in the 9 years I have been at St. Andrews has been fully up to my wishes and expectations. I participate in its activities and have pleasant contacts with many of its residents. My family here is very supportive, particularly Betty, and following her Debi, Sue, Judy and Jim, Betty at 216 Sept. 14, 1997
Maryam -
I just returned from a delightful visit with Dad in Florida. He’d had a bout with sciatica (nerve pain in his back leg) the previous week but was able to get around well using a walker. We made plans for the Big Birthday on Dec. 8th; he wants so badly for it to be a pleasant and momentous occasion but without too much excitement. He dictated the following letter to you, also one to Marya which I’ll send separately.
Sept. 11, 1997
“Dearest Maryam,
I have been thinking about you and the way you are now situated. My imagination carries me back from hardhat to Islamabad to Toronto, Canada. All of my grandchildren in that wide area are a source of pleasure, and satisfaction in their splendid individual developments. The imminent arrival of Maryam’s baby, I am confident will be a source of happiness to both you and her mother. My life in the 9 years I have been at St. Andrew’s has been fully up to my wishes and expectations. I participate in its activities and have pleasant contacts with many of its residents. My family here is very supportive, particularly Betty, and following her Debi, Sue, Judy and Jim, Betty at 217 Maryam -
Betty and I were so happy to receive your latest letter. These must have been a little delay, because it arrived weeks after you dated it. I made a copy for myself & sent the original to Florida. First of all, let me assure you that I do not have Parkinson’s! This is a neurological condition affecting the vocal chord muscles that makes speech strained and the voice tremulous. There’s no cause and no cure, but periodic injections bring months of improvement and relief. I’ll just have to learn to live with it and remember that so many health problems could be far worse. I’m glad that you’re feeling fine, and that Marya is, too. Do give her my love and best wishes that everything continues to proceed normally.
Did I tell you about finding Helene? I knew she’d moved from Scarsdale but had no idea where… until I happened to spot a NY Times article about Cornell, among them one to Helene Rosenblatt who received her degree at age 70! We’ve since had a telephone conversation & she sounds marvelous. She has a job through the University and she and Bob plan to stay in Ithaca for at least 2 yrs. I’m really so proud of her!! spent a month in Australia, New Zealand and 218 Maryam -
Betty urged me to get this special note from him off to you as soon as possible. Sometimes your letters reach here within a week - hope this one does!
Dictated on May 13 ‘95:
Dearest Maryam:
This letter is written in celebration of your 61st birthday, and from my viewpoint it is marked by good health, happiness and a flourishing extended family.
Haider called me a short time ago and gave me family news in generalities. Sometime I would be pleased to receive details in regard to yourself.
As for me, my vital signs seem to be maintained, and I have a quiet—but interesting—mode of life.
Much, much love to you, Khan Sahib, Saadia and Marya.
Affectionately,
Daddy
Indeed we have not heard from you in quite a long time (March 15th is the date of your last letter) and do hope your family is healthy and happy. I have been particularly concerned about Khalid. Walter and I celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary last week at Shakertown in Kentucky. There are only 6 Shakers alive now in the U.S. 500 resided at this lovely spot at one time. A month from today we leave for Spokane, Washington where we’ll be delegates to the Unitarian annual assembly. Before our return home we’ll stop off at Boise, Idaho, and meet 219 Honeygum —
I’ve just returned from a delightful visit with Dad. He showed me your letter, which he appreciated so much (do continue to write directly to him) and asked me to promise to write as soon as I got home. Dad is truly remarkable! He is not feeble or weak as you seem to think… I’m sorry if I’ve given that impression. He does use a walker or a cane when we go out and is bent over… but that’s to be expected. His good friends, Margaret and Don, are away until late Sept. or Oct.; they are wonderful about taking him out for meals. Since they’ve been gone & with the Florida heat, he hasn’t been outside at all. Unfortunately, when I was there we had the aftermath of a hurricane & I wasn’t able to take him to the restaurants he likes. We had a good visit anyway. Dad, I congratulate you on your new grandson. Khalid called while I was away to acknowledge the note I’d written to him. I wonder when he is planning to see his son. Do hope their marriage will continue, as he always spoke lovingly of Lirhana to me. Haider keeps in touch with Dad - bless him. I know how sad you all must be over the loss of Sa’ada’s child. Our condolences to you all….

Maryam Jameelah:
Your father Herbert asked us to write to you to let you know that he received the family photographs you sent on January 20th. He was very happy to get your letter and felt honored to get the photographs.
Your father is recovering nicely from recent surgery (January 23, 1987) to relieve some pressure caused by a hematoma (Blood Clot) in his head. He was in the hospital for several days and is currently in the medical center at St. Andrews. He hopes to be back to his apartment by early next week and will write you at that time.
We are friends of your father and we are helping him until he gets back on his feet.
Once again he really was delighted with your letter and photos and you should be hearing from him shortly.

Dear Myra & Herbert,
We heard that you had returned to U.S.A & thought we would never hear of you again! Imagine our delight when your card arrived. You have wisely gone to a place for its lovely climate. I do hope you have no regrets about returning to your native soil & that you have made friends & are enjoying life.
Unlike you, this country is not noted for its climate - we just have weather & it is always a surprise packet to see what the next day has in store, for even in the summer in the midst of lovely weather, we can wake up to pouring rain & a cold day when we have to resort to a fire! However, it is our native land & we are never surprised!
222 It amused us when we returned to find opening to any conversation is the state of weather and secondly, how the garden is growing. Things we had forgotten in Majorca!! However, we have a little bungalow on a corner site and on one side, we look on to a field with cows and horses and a village, with a little church, in the background. Very pleasant. We joined a bridge club in Chichester, so with our game of bridge, shopping, cooking, cleaning and garden in SA in the Summer, we always seem to be busy and I’m glad to say we are very well and happy. We exchange visits with the Peppers in the summer and have a game of bridge with them. We had a letter from Paddy Biver recently and his sister, who was blind and paralysed had died, so they are in this country dealing with her affairs. Then (who is accident prone!!) had fallen and dislocated her hip, so he said she was still limping. Bimy and David Palmer are in Bournemouth, but so far we haven’t seen them. Last winter was dreadful, snow, winds, ice the lot! So far, this year, it has been cold, dry and sunny which is very pleasant.
We may go to Majorca this year if there is no war. That will be our third if it starts, so hope we go out quickly!! We would love to hear from you again with all good wishes to you both. Love, Alice.
223 Dear Myra,
These birds are winging their way to you to bring you all the good wishes appropriate to birthdays, plus an answer to your letter of three weeks ago. Maybe the best feature of this birthday is that you can look forward to the family visit, instead of having to say good-bye a week earlier! At least, that is the way I would react under similar circumstances.
You did finally have a real Thanksgiving dinner, didn’t you? I seem to remember somebody telling me that some friends had invited you. I hope I’m right. Elka cooked one of her gourmet dinners, for David and his menage and two old ladies from Friends House - me and my best friend here. The Lelands are vacationing at Christmas time, so I’ll be familyless, but neighbours of the Lelands, whom I have met several times and like have asked if she calls me up of course I will. Transportation is my problem too, but I am more fortunate than you, as many of the people
From Herz, Apt. 30, 684 Benicia Dr., Santa Rosa CA 95405 224 here have cars and are very generous with them, and thoughtful as well. The friend whom Elka invited to Thursday’s dinner is sometimes offended when I go marketing, or to the doctor with another resident. Her name is Helen Elderkin, and she is Smith 1930 and has her 55th Reunion next May, so we’ll fly East together. Marian will be there for her 10th and will meet us at the Airport and drive us to Hawa. Have you ever been to Reunion? I do not remember your going, but you may have gone before. You came into the family. It’s a delightful experience that every alumna should share at least once.
Well, it’s time to close, so I’ll tell you in plain English that I congratulate you, hope you have a joyous birthday even without the physical presence of your family, and that good health will bless the coming year. Love you have, and with love and good health what more does one really need? - except peace. May Heaven grant us all that, since Reagan doesn’t seem interested.
(Forgive me for having introduced that name)
Much love from
Elka

Dear Myra and Herb,
Greetings! As Paquita is cleaning here this morning, and has just asked me if I’ve heard from you, I thought it about time to write anyway and see how you are getting on in Florida. Did you find it terribly hot there this summer? Are you still as enthusiastic about it as before? Do you honestly recommend living in Florida? I understand there is some advantage in taxes because of the Homestead Act, but I don’t know what that is? If you understand it, please will you explain. Stan & I are thinking to return to the US to live by next spring, but we still haven’t any definite plans as to where we’ll go. We are hoping that by then the interest rates will have dropped, but of course that will probably mean that housing will go up to counteract it… I don’t think we are any better off in waiting, - because, after all, one can always refinance…
The Brit/Amer Club has been closed this month, and as we eat lunch there every day (almost), we’ve had to eat at other restaurants at much higher prices, and rarely as good. (I must admit though that one does find the club doesn’t change the menu very often.) In the summer I don’t like to cook in this tiny kitchen as it heats up so fast, and to buy the food at the market really isn’t much of a savings. The prices keep rising here, and oddly enough, the people don’t seem to protest or object. I don’t think the wages are so high, so we wonder how the Spaniards can afford to eat. The shopowners are protesting because they aren’t selling much this year, but I think the answer is that the tourists don’t think they have any bargains anymore. This year there aren’t so many tourists anyway, presumably scared away from Spain after all the strikes and bombs in Spain, - hardly conducive to luring tourists here….
We’ve been playing a lot of Bridge at the club, but I must admit, I find it a bit distracting when I come up against people who play all the phoney conventions, - in the end, they usually go down anyway. This summer the Bridge players were playing at the Palais Athené (sp?) but Stan & I soon quit going there because the hotel wouldn’t turn on the air conditioning until 6:30 PM and it meant sitting there with sweating palms, and the perspiration rolling down one’s face and splashing on the floor (or just about), - so we gave it up as not being comfortable enough. I think that Tamara, Dan Nupen, the Suttons, and a few others continued to go, Vernon Holmes also.
This summer it’s been terribly hot up until August, and this month not so bad, at least it’s always cool in the evenings so we sleep well. We didn’t go to the beaches at all this year, as everyone who went said it was not comfortable.
We hope you are both well & happy. WE hope you’ll write.
I added this as an afterthought in case you’d like to send mail (Edificio Tropie Piso 14, Apt 6 Marquis de la Cenia 39 Son Armadams, Palma) DE MALLORCA Tel. Emsworth 71459 2 Birch Tree Drive, Emsworth, Hants. PO10 7RT. England. 27th. Jan. 1980.
Dear Herbert and Myra, Thank you for your Christmas Card and good wishes which we were delighted to receive. Indeed we had heard that you had gone back home but unfortunately until we received your card we did not have your address. We are pleased to have this so that we can keep in touch from time to time.
We were not surprised to hear that you had returned to the States because you told us that you were seriously thinking of doing that when we had the pleasure of seeing you again in October 1978 when we visited Mallorca. From what you say in your Christmas Card it sounds that, like us, you are enjoying being back home. I am sure that when one gets a ‘biyold’ it is a nice feeling to be in one’s own Country.
From your address it would seem that you have picked a good place to live !! The climate must be very similar to that of Mallorca if not even better. Long may you enjoy your return home.
You ask for news about ourselves so here goes. I am glad to say that since we saw you in Edificio Tropis, Mallorca, in October ‘77 we have both enjoyed good health. Alice is even better and stronger than she was then, so, her very major heart surgery has proved a tremendous success which is a great joy to us both. Now she only visits the Heart Hospital in Southampton - once a year - !! We are not especially fond of the weather in the U.K. even although living on the South coast we do get the best of it, however we have a very comfortable small Bungalow and I have had the walls insulated and installed some double-glazing so whatever the weather is like outside we are as warm as toast inside.
I keep very active and last year I painted all the gutterings and woodwork outside, so saving myself about £500 ! The cost of labour here is terrible. Over the year I have done quite a bit of medical work again. The local group of doctors had some bad luck, two of them had Coronaries so I was glad to help out and fortunately I had kept up my reading, even in Mallorca. I only did consulting sessions, no house calls or night work, having to be at the Office at 9 a.m. was bad enough ! The doctor who had a coronary in August had to have heart surgery in October : he has done very well and returned to full duty early in January this year so I was happy to retire for the second time. I enjoyed being back in harness again but was glad when my stint was finished, October to January was quite a long spell.
Dear Mother,

Hope you will be quite well and happy at home with family. Although I have never wrote to you before, here I would like to take up the critical situation of Pakistan, your intellectual opinion and suggestions.
I hope you will definitely be busy in your work, which is devoted to the Islam you preached in your books, and invited the non-Muslims to think about this merciful religion. It is your day and night struggle to introduce yourself in most countries as a thinker, scholar and intellectual. Your books are being introduced and read in the world. Directly, the reader who is a non-Muslim thinks about the religion of Islam. I hope the day will come soon Insha-Allah, when Muslims as well as non-Muslims must know your name as a Muslim scholar of the world. I am really proud of you that such a woman is my mother, who lives with us. Love to us.
I am working at Sanda about 20-25 kms away from Hyderabad, where investigation to find coal is continuing. It is a Lakhra Project being run by aid of USA and our company is involved as a contractor.
Now in Hyderabad and also in Karachi curfew is imposed. Situation is very serious and critical. Kidnap, murder, robbery, these bad social evils are increasing, not even in Karachi and Hyderabad but all over in Pakistan, no one is safe. Govt have not taken strict action against those who had the name in incidents which held in Karachi and Hyderabad in between two cities like in the name of Sohrab Goth operation. Hundreds of thousands have been killed and thousands of people injured in these incidents. I heard there are four or five ministers who are involved in a Govt issue but Govt have not disclosed their names. From here, you see the Govt have no control not even on people but also on officials.
11 It is very bad because if in the Govt you keep black sheep, how is it possible you control the social evils? In the train no one passenger finds himself safe. Young robbers trick with passengers to make friends and give them toffees, cakes, tea, tablets to eat. The passengers get after getting they sleep. Then the robbers took off their luggages. This happened in many trains and all in Sind. I think here are many social elements who did not want to unite Pakistan, unlawfully they do which they want or like.

THIS LETTER IS FOR MARYAM:
March 26, 1994
Dear Maryam:
I received your letter of February 18th and wish to acknowledge receipt of the wedding pictures. It is evident from your letter that you are in good health, and your lifestyle seems to follow the satisfactory pattern of past years. The approach of your 60th birthday on May 22/23 gives rise to many thoughts. From a paternal perspective, this day marks a successful living achievement. Currently it seems exemplified in my acquaintance with your children, and through them it would seem you would derive the fullest measure of happiness. In my 100th year I can report that, all things considered, I am in good physical and mental health. I am fortunate in having selected St. Andrews—the ambiance is excellent; the care received adequate; and my manner of daily living interesting. I have good friends (among them Margaret, Donald and Joe), and with them I go out to luncheon and dinner, which makes for a welcome change.
I close with much love to you and Khan Sahib,
Affectionately,
Daddy
Dearest Maryam -
Isn’t he remarkable?!
I’m planning a visit the 3rd weekend in April and will write to you about it.
I spoke to Khalid after I read about the gas explosion in Edison. Fortunately he and Lihane were not affected - but it was scary. Love to you all
Betty 230 August 23, 1995

Dearest Maryam:
Warm Greetings. After many a month lacking a direct contact with you I thought this letter will be a fore-runner of others.
May this find you and your family in good health and enjoying life. In your anticipated reply I would welcome details about them. I am concerned about Khaled. I’m hopeful his difficulty will be quickly resolved.
All things considered, I am in good health. I find daily living both comfortable and pleasant. I participate in community activities, of which many are provided. I find companionship with the many residents. Most anticipated are the phone calls I receive frequently from Betty and Debbie, Jim and Judy, and at infrequent intervals from my grandsons.
At this point I close with much love to you, Khan Sahib, Sa’adia and Marya.
Affectionately,
Daddy 231 August 23, 1995
Dearest Maryam:
I was very happy to receive your newsy letter of July 18 with a full report of my Pakistan family. It must be a great comfort to have Marya and her baby nearby. It is about time I imagine for the new arrival by Sa’adia, and trust a preference for gender is realized. She certainly has demonstrated her ability to cope.
It is well Haider and Khaled are together and have the intelligence and knowledge to work out their problems. It is well that Faazir is receptive to the idea of employment.
I am very cognizant of my 100th year, and up to the present moment enjoy the blessing of good health. I am in close touch with Betty, and Walter who this month is celebrating his 71st birthday. Debbie and her husband are doing well professionally.
Much love to you, Haider, Khaled, Sa’adia and Marya.
Affectionately,
Daddy 232 October 19, 1995
Dearest Maryam:
I was very happy to receive your full and newsy letter of September 3, and note the matter of slimming down, and in that regard I do hope you will give it the necessary attention and, incidentally, purchase a bathroom scale. It’s highlighted in responsible medical circles regarding the risk of obesity.
I was delighted the other day to have a phone call from Khalid who told me of arrangements to visit here from November 11 to 14. I welcome this visit in order to learn about his living and working life. He informed me that Haider and family are now in Allentown, Pa. I trust he will find it a desirable place of residence.
May I make a special request for my 101st birthday? I would like a very special picture of my daughter made by a professional photographer. This I would place on my bookshelf, well framed, so that I can see it each day.
Possibly you see on CNN, or the media, the political climate that exists here, and also a crisis arising with our Afro-American citizenry.
I am pleased to report that at this time my health is good, all things considered. I am looking forward to celebrating another birthday.
Much love to you, Khaled, Khan Sahib, Sa’adia and Marya.
Affectionately,
Daddy 233 December 19, 1995

Dearest Maryam:
I always find it so very satisfying to receive your full and newsy letters and to know that you and Khan Sahib are well.
I recently had my 101st birthday and am pleased to report to you that, all things considered, I am in good health. Betty, Walter and Jim came here to celebrate the event, and I was also recognized by the two communities of which I am a part.
In mid-November I had a visit from Khalid and found him a most interesting personality. He seems to have a very good job, is living with a congenial family and visits each weekend with Haider. However, marital difficulties still concerned him, and I trust these will work out for all concerned. Haider and Fazir called me a few days ago and they seem such a happy and well adjusted couple. Both have good jobs so they are living easily and their voices seem to reflect their contentment.
Much, much love to you, Khan Sahib, Marya and Sa’adia.
Affectionately,
Daddy

Dearest Maryam:
Some time has elapsed since my last letter and I am taking up my pen - figuratively - to give you, in capsule form, my thoughts and experiences.
Betty was here a few weeks ago and we had a delightful few days together. Now I hear from her by telephone twice each week. It was so rewarding seeing her in person. She and Walter lead a busy and eventful life together. Betty has a parttime job with a professional and does volunteer work at the hospital. Walter has writing projects which he does with expertise, plays tennis and this week is going to Boston for a conference. Debbie, as a lawyer, is acting as a magistrate and her husband is a busy cardiologist. Sue is a highly competent teacher of small children and is compensated accordingly.
I have been hearing from both your sons recently and I know you will be gratified to learn that they are both prospering and well adjusted. Haider and his family seem to be living very comfortably. His wife has a satisfactory job as a branch manager and they have the necessary arrangements for taking care of their child. Khaled’s frame of mind seems to be good and I would infer that he seems to be working out any personal problem.
For myself, I am comfortable and, considering my age, I feel very fortunate in both my mental and physical situation.
Having CNN available, do you have any interest in the political and many social conditions transpiring? If so, put your questions in your next letter. I know it must be so gratifying having Marya and her baby so close. Much love to you, Sahib, Marya and Sa’adia.
Affectionately,
Daddy

Dear Maryann -
This may arrive a bit early for your birthday, but it brings with it much love and congratulations from both Walter and myself. What is your family custom regarding events like this? Do let me know if you have any kind of special treat? The weather must be frightfully hot in Lahore. Is there air conditioning in the homes? My office is moving into a new building on Monday. It’s called the Psychiatric Pavilion (I’m in the drug & alcohol rehabilitation department). None of the windows open so we will have a “climate-controlled” air system - same temperature all year round. It would be nice to have some fresh air, even if 236 its hot!
I have sent a check to New York for “The Arab World” - also, in January, for “Son of Sword”, which you should have received by now. You are right not to involve Dad in your book orders.
Debi is most appreciative of your family pictures and hopes you like the enclosed wedding announcement. Six weeks from today!! We sent out over a hundred invitations and are hopeful that about 70 can attend. Walter’s mother cannot make the trip; nor can Aunt Helen. We do expect Helene + Bob, Aunt Dotty, Billy + Mary, Jim + Ceel + perhaps Judy. Be assured that we will have photographs for you.
Did Khalid + Haider get through with their examinations? Am glad Maryam did well. Our love to all the family + especially to you - Betty 237 March 14 ‘95
Dearest Maryam -
This is an S.O.S. letter because Dad keeps reminding me how anxious he is to hear news of your family. I forwarded your last letter and Maryam’s to him the same day I received it. Could not remember exactly when that was, but your letter pleased Dad immensely. It’s Khalid we’re missing. I tried to phone him but the number I have is an old one and no longer in operation. Please send me his correct phone number and address. Do hope everything’s O.K.
It’s been almost a month since my birthday - 67… wheee! Had a nice celebration with Walt and the gifts. Time is going much too fast!!! We’re planning a trip to Spokane, Washington in June for a church meeting and to meet Greg’s parents in Idaho.
My next letter will be more newsy - Dad asked me to get this off to you right away. He misses hearing from your family. Send letters or phone calls directly to him. I’ll be going down to visit in 2 weeks. Much love to you,

Dearest Khalid, -
You will soon be 13 years old - an important age, I know, for a boy. Grand daddy sent mother a check (money) so she can buy you two dresses for the mosque and something else special if you want it. I am enclosing a few stamps in case you are still interested in collecting them. We were delighted with the letter you 239 dictated to Mother hope you will send another soon.
Please try to learn to speak and write in English. Then we can correspond more often - We hope some day you can visit us in the States. I do not think we can come to Pakistan again but we would so like to see you and each of your family. Our congratulations on your Birthday and dearest love to you, Mother, Father, Halima, Haider and Marya. Sincerely your Grand parents 240 Lighthouse Point, Florida
December 27, 1979
dearest grandson Khalid Farouq and Haider Farouq: I was so very happy to receive Khalid’s letter because it is the beginning of direct talk between us. Grandmother and I wish we could come to visit and know our dear grandchildren in Lahore but we are now very old and the journey is a long one so we will just continue to write.
I like the idea that you would like to come to the United States, but Mother must talk in English to you at home. It is very different from Pakistan, and it would require reading and study about it with which Mother could help. Tell me about your school and your friends: do you play much hockey and soccer?
Try to get a map and locate Florida: it is at the southern most point and while there is cold and snow in other parts it is warm here.
I am sending Mother some money to buy Halima Sa’adia, Marya and you and Haider some very nice things. Please, you and Sa’adia write us very soon. Grandmother and I send each of you much, much love.
Affectionately,
Grandfather
Darling Peggy: It was a wonderful idea for you to write the letter for Khalid and now I so profoundly feel we have some line of communication with our grandchildren. Marking my eighty fifth birthday I am enclosing a check for five hundred dollars to be used solely for OUR grandchildren in the manner you see fit. Of course I shall be interested to know your plan in regard to its use. This has been a wise move and while it has required some adjustment, Mother and I feel more secure as we advance in age, being with our own people and closer to the family. My dearest love to you, Khan Sahib, and the children. Your

Before they did, we had set a wedding date and began to make arrangements to get married sometime in May of 1981. We mutually decided that it wasn’t a good idea and then drugs became an issue and any ideas of marriage were certainly discarded. Our relationship deteriorated quickly and Michael became quite self-destructive. He committed suicide in April of 1982, almost two years ago. Needless to say, I was devastated. I am happy in that I’ve never felt responsible for anything which happened but I experienced a great deal of sadness and, more recently, anger. In any case, I relate this to you by way of explaining the fact that I’ve not married. My relationship with Michael covered most of the years when many women (including most of my friends) become married. I was 28 when he killed himself. It took me quite a while after that event to be able to think about the possibility of having another relationship. I spent most of my time building new life for myself, thinking alot about why the relationship had begun and why I had remained with it so long after it had “gone bad”. I learned alot about myself, and, for the first time in a long time, began liking myself and feeling more comfortable with who I was. I began doing some volunteer work at a hotline (a place where people can call by telephone anonymously to discuss problems) and met yet another Michael (although quite a different sort!) in January of 1983 and this newer relationship has kind of endured until the present. Michael and I did discuss marriage and, prior to September of last year, had every intention of becoming married. However, he began medical school in September which is an all-encompassing endeavor and I decided I was put on our relationship and we’ve become far less committed by necessity.
We remain extremely close, see each other the idea of marriage is, for now, out of years younger than I am and feels less or I really would like to be married at this thing I want to do only with the right pe

You asked whether it’s common for single don’t think so. Certainly, it is now an However, for what I think are obvious rea just too much to be the caretaker of the etc. More importantly, there is in Ameri mother, father, and children—is of impor that it is extremely important that a chi during the early years. Of course, things here and it is often the case that, in sp ents, both of them must work and the child (an infant in some cases) must be put 3 in daycare on a daily basis. Of course, this is also sometimes done by choice-it is no longer assumed that the woman will remain home to take care of the baby. Often she has a career which is just as important as her husband’s. Also, sometimes it is now the husband who remains home as the “housewife”. Most options are acceptable but I do believe that the two-parent home is still seen as the most desirable. The sad reality is that there are an overwhelming number of single-parent, female head-of-household families in America. However, these are not as the result of choice. They are as a result of divorce, desertion, and a variety of other circumstances. These families are who make up the majority of America’s poor.
You say in your letter that our family is fortunate to have preserved its ties, “while most other families in the USA and Europe have suffered complete collapse and disintegration”. I can’t speak for Europe but, as far as the United States goes, I would definitely argue your point. There are serious problems here, many of them involving families or lack thereof, but I have also seen much happiness within existing and new families. I believe that family ties, values, and morals are still seen as extremely important and that is evidenced by what I see in everyday life. Given the problems of living in America these days, I sometimes think it’s a miracle that so many families do stay together but, as they should, the family members continue to draw strength from one another and survive. Unfortunately, more publicity is given to the negatives-alcohol and drug abuse, rape and incest, etc. All of those things happen too, they are real problems, but there’s plenty of good stuff as well!!
I could go on and on but must stop here. I hope I’ve given you some insight in this letter as to my life. I know I’ve really only focused on one aspect of my life—I haven’t given you an overall picture as you did for me. Hopefully, our correspondence will continue and, eventually, you’ll come to feel as though you know me, at least somewhat better than you did a month ago!! Please write when you can and give lots of love for me to your family.

After such a long time I am writing you this letter. To look after my six childrens and to see the kitchen and to look after the house and to study the children’s daily to keep & ready their uniforms and lunch box’es and all other things keep me busy all the time, but you always be in my heart in my remembrance. Aimon and other childrens go to school at 6:30 in the morning because the school is at much distance from our house. At about 3 p.m the childrens come back home. She also studies computer science. She is very interested in computer. At 11 to 12 o’clock she studies. Areeba is not so good in studies as compare to Aiman. Is Khalid will come to Pakistan for this case? Ferhana should not do this because she is not alone she haise a baby.
4 and the baby should also need the father’s. What she will tell about his father when he will grow up? I think that as the mother is important for the baby, the father is more important for the baby and when the baby is a boy. She is doing a great fault and she never knows this. She will know then, when the child will grow up. Take care of your health. Salam and love to Abbah Than. Say to him, I am perfectly all right in my house.

Dear Aunt Peggy:
I just got your letter of February 9th and am responding immediately to let you know all about Grandmommy. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed as having cancer of the pancreas, which is terminal. She spent about two and a half weeks in the hospital but is now home and apparently resting pretty comfortably. Mom was in Florida for about three weeks but not to take care of her—rather, to take care of Granddaddy who, as you can imagine, has been devastated by this turn of events. At home, Grandmommy has round-the-clock care and I’ve heard she is completely satisfied with it. Also, there are hospice people who she thinks are absolutely wonderful. Predictably, her spirits are high, she’s continuing to read avidly, and is as interested in goings on in the world as ever. From my limited knowledge of cancer, I do know that pancreatic cancer progresses quickly. It’s not curable mainly because it’s impossible to diagnose until it has progressed pretty far. Evidently, the most time which can be hoped for is 5-6 months. You should know that at the moment, she’s not experiencing any significant pain and, of course, what we’re all hoping for is that she remains comfortable until the end.
When they feel up to it, both Sue and I plan to visit Florida. In any event, I intend to call them tomorrow and at that time will convey your message of love. Of course, now that you know she’s at home, you can write to her as well.
I’ll apologize on behalf of both Granddaddy and my own mother insofar as communicating with you is concerned. Mom thought that you’d been written to twice. Regardless, you can imagine how busy she’s been making sure that both of your parents are well taken care of and comfortable, as well as dealing with her own shock and grief.
I imagine it must be extremely difficult for you to be so far away and seemingly out of touch with what’s going on. If you need further information or just need to “talk” via letter, feel free to contact me.
Sorry I don’t have better news to report but, given the diagnosis, things seem to be going rather well.
Love to you all,
Debi

Dearest Maryam:
You and your family made a most important contribution to my 100th birthday: Your letter, which I cherish, and your card; Khalid with his card and the white dress shirt he sent me; Haider and Fazia with a beautiful card and amplifying letter; Marya with her letter conveying warm thoughts. All of these made for a highly satisfactory celebration of my event. Of course Betty and her family were basic in the enjoyment of the celebration.
The two communities of which I am a member (viz., the Unitarian Fellowship and St. Andrews Retirement Home) held receptions at which I received the congratulations of their many members. The Event was the culmination of a long lifetime and made me realize that I had achieved a high personal evaluation from my family and community.
Betty has read me your last letter, which I found most rewarding. It reflects your comfort, good health and your maternal appreciation of the various family aspects.
Please convey to Marya my appreciation of her letters. Her one-day stay with me made a lasting impression of a fine granddaughter!
Much love to you, Khan Sahib, Saadia and Marya— Affectionately, DAD
We just received Marya’s letter, I enjoyed hearing of her happiness with her husband and the baby. Have you received the birthday photos I sent?

Dear Maryam Jameelah,
A.A. Sorry for the delay in writing back to you. Thank you for sending us two lovely photographs of Bibi and Farooq etc. On return from Pakistan I spoke to your dad; he was very pleased to hear from me and inquired if you received his letter.
I have enclosed two prints with negative, also as I have slide with me. Hope you wanted the same pictures; somehow I misplaced your letter. Yusuf Mamoon must be very busy these days; I am sure and hope he would be elected for provincial assembly, that he is standing for. Our salaam to him. Love to Teddy. Sincerely, Saadia.

Dear Peggy,
Mother is comfortable following major surgery, gaining slowly in strength and receiving the best of care. The first evidence of trouble occurred on the night of Dec. 10th with extreme nausea. The doctor sent her for x-ray. A biopsy was taken from the stomach region and found malignant. She entered the hospital, and the surgeon found the malignancy had spread to other organs. She can go on for days or a limited number of months, and the present effort is to try and help her lead a normal life again. Thus far she has experienced minimal pain and the doctor and 246 My dearest Appa,

I hope you will be fine and in good health. I don’t know why you have not received my first letter.
My little baby “AZQA” is now 20 days old. She is much prettier than both of my baby daughters. She has gray eyes and has a very fair complexion. My delivery case was normal. She was born on 11th September at 9 o’clock in the morning. I went to the hospital at 5 o’clock in the morning.
I am fine but I still feel weakness.
When she was born she was more than eight pounds, a little more than eight pounds. She is much healthier than all of my children. Now her weight is nine and a half pounds.
Aiman is doing fine in her studies. She stood 2nd in her Mid Term Examination, and she got a Merit certificate for that. She got 246 marks out of 250, and one boy who stood first got 247 marks.
258 I will come to Lahore in December, Inshallah. Khalid telephoned me once in August. He told me that your sister is coming with Khalid for his marriage. I am very happy to hear this.
I received a letter from Humara a few days ago. She wrote that Haider had gone to America and that father is not well.
Please write me soon the address of Khalid. The latest address of Khalid. Amna is in Lahore. She came there for a marriage ceremony at Canal Bank. How is Maryia? I love Maryia. Write to me soon please.
Salam to Father and all the family. Ask “Abba Jan” to take care of his health.

Father can’t be succeed in Election. We heard this news from T.V. I think your heart is broken, and therefore you didn’t write me any letter. How is father’s health? And also write about your own health.
I am alright, and I am in 6th month and I am going fine. My blood pressure is normal, and my weight is normal. Shaher Yar is also fine, and he is doing his job well. There is 11 o’clock of night, and I am feeling sleepy. Today I also wrote letters to Humara and Asma. Say salam to father from me and Shaher Yar.
Ocean’s of love

Saadia v My dear Appa.
Asslamo-Alai-Kum.
I hope you will be fine and well. I am writing you this letter after a long time, because I was not well. I had an abortion, just a sudden abortion and I was admitted in hospital for two days. I was in 3rd month. Now I am well but I still have weakness. Then both babies Aiman and Areeba had measles. Both of them had high temperature 105°. Now both are alright. I will come to Lahore next month. Very sorry for that you have not got any pictures of babies yet from me. I know you will be anxiously waiting for your pictures of grand daughters. In this week or next week you will get your pictures, because there are still 5 pictures in the camera “reel”. We all were so upset in these months, that we had no time.
The lady doctor did D.N.C on me. I don’t know why I had an abortion. Suddenly I had withdrawal bleeding. How is your health? One day Khalid rang me, he asked me that I am bringing on number many times. Lahore, but no one is at home. I also wrote a letter to Khalid. Aiman is doing her summer homework. As soon as she finishes the homework, I will come to Lahore. How is father? How is his health now? Say salam from me. May God give him a long healthy life. I have never seen such a good father of anybody who loves their children in a true manner. I will be thankful all my life. What are you doing now in these days? It is so hot in Faisalabad and I think there will be very hot in Lahore too. Thank God there is no load shedding now. How is Maryia? She will be free now because of her summer vacations, love to Maryia from me. I think you will miss your sons, but don’t worry they are happy and satisfied in America. They went there for their good future, and only because they went to America they got such good, beautiful and educated girls which are their wives now. You are a great mother and woman. Love to all of you from me and your granddaughter.

My dearest Appa,
Assalam Alaikum,
I hope you will be well and fine. I received all of your letters but I could not write you any letter, because Amna was in Saudi Arabia and all housework was on me. I had to cook food, make chappatis, wash clothes, clean all my house and with Aiman you can understand why I could not write you any letter.
Khalid came to Faisalabad and had a nice visit to my house. He was bored in Faisalabad because there he had no friend. He can tell you that how much work I have to do in this situation!
Amna has now gone back home. Her health is fine. She told us that it was very hot in Mecca and Medina. Now they give every facility. All of the area was air conditioned. The dispensaries were opened at every place. She will send you a big fine dupatta, a Janamaz and dates.
265 of Medina and a dupatta to Shafiqs.
Khalid tells me that perhaps he will go to America this month. He tells me that he will inform me if he will go to America. How is grandfather? I hope he will write you a letter. Send love from me to grandfather. How is Maryia? I received her lovely letter which she kept in your letter. I am now in the last of 9th month. Please pray for me to God. Aiman is fine and is in good health. I found and saw all my albums and in books but I didn’t find your picture. When I find your picture I will send it to you.
All my love

Assalam-o-Alaikum
I hope you will be fine. I received your three letters and one beautiful picture of Khalid and Haider. There were some of our house problems and I am mentally upset that I can’t tell you the quarrels of Shahryar and you and Amna and quarrels of Amna with the mother of Chhenian. The repairing of our home was started. Now thank God it has finished. But now new problems created. Therefore I could not write you any letter. Thank God I am not pregnant yet. I am just all right. Baby Areeba now stands on her feet, but can’t walk. I think in next month she will start walking. Aiman’s birthday is coming soon on 20th July. She will be 3 years old. She started the first Qurani Qaida. Now I also teach her General Knowledge. She can answer all these questions.
What is our religion? Who born all of us?
Who had made this country? Now many provinces in Pakistan?
In which province we live?

My dearest Appa
Assalamo-Alaikum.
I hope you will be fine and well. Very very sorry for this that I am writing you a letter so late. Again very sorry for that. I am so busy in all household work that I got tired and therefore I didn’t write any letter.
I kept all fasts of Ramadhan except four. Aiman is fine and now she starts walking. When she was a month old then she started walking.
I was very happy to hear that news that Khalid now has a good job. But my advice is this he should get more education. Because F.A. is not enough for a boy. He should get more education.
Eid is coming and only two days are left. May you enjoy a happy Eid. Say salam to all the family. Love to Maryia, Khalid, Haider and love to you from me. Oceans of love. I will write again to you when I will have time.

My dear Appa,
Asslamo Alaikum.
I hope you will be fine and in good health in this Mubarak month of Ramzan. Aiman is keeping all fasts (Roja), Areeba keeps only four. I posted Eid cards to Khalid and Haider today, and also pictures of Uzair. The annual examinations of children are starting from 12th of March. On 31st of March the result will be handed over to children. I received your loving letter and an empty lifafa on which you typed your address. Thanks so much. Aiman drew an Eid card and posted it to you and Sania. Uzair caught flu and was sick last days, but now I took him to the doctor and now he is well. No rains came and the season is changing gradually. After Eid I will send you a group photo Inshallah…

I received your beautiful card and from Abba Jaan which was full of love. Thank you very much for your beautiful card.
These days Aiman, Areeba and Ajka are covering their courses. I have to sit with them for two or three hours daily. Their courses are too long and tough. I keep the pictures of grandfather in my album. Thanks a lot. Wish you a very happy

As-lame-Alaikham:
I hope you will be well and fine. I and Shaheryar are also fine. You will be very happy to hear this news that I have received a letter from my cousin “Sue” and a letter from grandfather.
I posted a letter to “Sue” and I wrote her a long letter in which I asked many questions and wrote answers of those which she asked from me like “how we spent our days” or about the culture of Pak. Now I will write a letter to grandfather soon. Sue wants to correspond by letters. I think you will be very happy to hear all this news.
281 I hope you will be fasting in this month of Ramadhan. I am fine and I am in 8th month now. I cannot answer your letter so quickly and for this I am very sorry. For this you asked about heroine and opium. Opium and heroine are very common in Faisalabad especially in boys’ colleges. Opium is not common in rich and educated families but heroine is very common in students.
Love to all Maryia, Khalid, Haider, and salam to father and all the family. Yours loving daughter “Saadia”

At 3pm they came back to home, their school is at a long distance. Only their break-fast is a big cup of milk with Ovaltine. I gave them lunch for school. Aiman is now much taller for her age. Now their exams will start on 21st of this month. Shaharyar will teach them. Therefore, I am coming with Nabia on 18th of January. On 24th I will go back. Nabia is all the time caught flu and cold. All the time she wants to feed 285 my milk. She is not much fat as Azka, but a normal baby. I am again pregnant. I am not happy of my pregnancy because I don’t want any but now I cannot do anything, but Shaharyar is happy. Don’t tell anybody about my pregnancy.

The kite is the world’s oldest form of aircraft, likely originating in the Orient 3,000 years ago. Named after a graceful member of the hawk family, kites today soar in an endless variety of sizes and designs around the world.
In Japan, teams of people fly kites taller than themselves at colourful festivals. A favourite in China is a fearsome dragon made of large circular disks flown in train. The box kite, so stable it doesn’t need a tail to prevent spinning and twisting, was invented by an Australian. And a Canadian, Alexander Graham Bell, built colossal kites of thousands of tetrahedrons that could lift humans into the air. Over the years, kites have been put to practical use by scientists, weather forecasters and inventors of airplanes, but are probably most often seen high in the sky above an open field on a windy day. Kiting in Canada is gaining popularity as organizations spring up across the country.
