Scholars date early Qur'an manuscripts by combining several lines of evidence. Palaeography compares letter shapes, page layout, verse markers and decoration with datable material, which allows a broad grouping into Hijazi, Mail and early Kufic styles. Radiocarbon dating measures the age of the parchment and returns a range, which gives the earliest the animal could have died, not the exact moment of writing. Multispectral and ultraviolet imaging recover erased lower texts in palimpsests such as the Sanaa manuscript, and researchers then compare these texts, spellings and verse divisions with the standard Uthmanic text.

Debates remain. Some scholars read the very early carbon ranges as support for a text fixed within the Prophet's lifetime or soon after, while others point out the wide error margins and the possibility that parchment was reused, so they prefer a mid-7th to early 8th century frame for many codices. Variants found in palimpsests are sometimes read as signs of a fluid early text and sometimes as ordinary scribal differences within a stable tradition. Specialists also differ on whether tradition about Uthman's codices can be matched with surviving manuscripts, which is why attributions such as the Topkapi and Samarkand copies are treated cautiously.
