Usaama al-Azami

Usaama al-Azami is a British scholar of contemporary Islamic thought. He began formal Islamic study in 2002 and took a BA in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford, graduating in 2008. From 2005 he studied regularly with Mohammad Akram Nadwi at the Al-Salam Institute, and he has read with or received licences from a range of other scholars. Between 2010 and 2015 he was at Princeton University’s Department of Near Eastern Studies, where he completed an MA and a PhD on modern Islamic political thought.

He has held the post of Departmental Lecturer in Contemporary Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on the political thought of modern religious scholars, and he is the author of Islam and the Arab Revolutions: The Ulama Between Democracy and Autocracy (Oxford University Press, 2022).

He is listed among the scholars who have contributed to Yaqeen Institute.
