Muhammad ibn 'Alawi al-Maliki

محمد بن علوي المالكي

1944–2004 · Saudi Arabia (Mecca) · Hadith scholar, Maliki jurist and teacher at the Sacred Mosque in Mecca

Muhammad ibn ‘Alawi al-Maliki al-Hasani was born in Mecca in 1944 into a family of Maliki scholars who, over several generations, had served as teachers and prayer leaders at the Sacred Mosque. His first and main teacher was his father, ‘Alawi ibn ‘Abbas al-Maliki, and he is reported to have received licences to teach (ijazas) from a number of scholars in Mecca, Medina and further afield. He later taught in his own right at the Haram and in his house in Mecca, attracting students from many countries; the English-language biography of him names the Egyptian scholar Ali Gomaa and the translator Gibril Haddad among those who studied with him.

He is generally presented as the leading Hijazi representative of a Sufi-leaning, Ash’ari and Maliki orientation in a country whose religious institutions were dominated by Salafi scholarship. His books deal with hadith, the Prophet’s life and character, legal theory, the sciences of the Qur’an, and with contested devotional questions such as visiting the Prophet’s tomb in Medina and celebrating the Prophet’s birthday. Several of them, including Mafahim yajib an tusahhah (“Concepts that Must Be Corrected”), were written as answers to criticism from the Salafi side, and they provoked sharp counter-responses from some Saudi scholars.

His works have been translated into Urdu, Malay, Indonesian and English and are widely read among Sufi-oriented Muslims in South and Southeast Asia and the Arab world. He died in Mecca in 2004 and was buried in the Mu’alla cemetery.
