Louay Safi

Louay Safi is a Syrian-born political scientist and writer on Islamic thought. He grew up in Damascus, studied civil engineering in the United States, and earned his master’s degree and doctorate in political science at Wayne State University in Detroit.

He has combined academic and institutional work. He taught at Wayne State University, the International Islamic University Malaysia and George Washington University, directed research and later served as executive director at the International Institute of Islamic Thought, edited the Journal of Islamic Social Sciences, and led the Association of Muslim Social Scientists. He was also executive director of the Islamic Society of North America’s Leadership Development Center and later taught at the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies. In the 2010s he became a spokesperson for the Syrian National Coalition.

His books address Islamic political theory, the epistemological foundations of Islamic thought, the ethics of war and peace, and Muslim engagement with modernity. Among them are The Challenge of Modernity (1994), Peace and the Limits of War (on classical conceptions of jihad), Tensions and Transitions in the Muslim World (2003) and The Qur’anic Narrative (2008). Several have also appeared in Arabic and other languages.
