Hatim al-Awni

Hatim ibn ‘Arif al-‘Awni, commonly styled al-Sharif because of his descent from the Prophet’s family, was born in 1966 in Ta’if, Saudi Arabia. He took his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in the Shari’a faculty (the College of Da’wa and Fundamentals of Religion) at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca, finishing the doctorate around 2000-01, and became a professor there. He is described in English-language reference works as a student of the hadith scholar Nasir al-Din al-Albani.

His academic work is in the science of hadith criticism and terminology: the books he wrote in the 1990s concern concealed mursal transmission, the proper titles of hadith books, a supplement to Ibn Hajar’s Lisan al-Mizan, and a proposed method for understanding hadith terminology. Later writings address wider questions, such as how to read the Qur’an as an interpreter, how Muslims should respond to disagreement among muftis, and the rational foundations of the hadith scholars’ critical method.

He served two terms as a member of the Saudi Consultative Assembly (Majlis al-Shura), from 2005 to 2013. In his teaching and public writing he is known for a maqasid-oriented approach to creed and law and for arguing against hasty charges of unbelief or innovation (takfir and tabdi’).
