Abdollah Javadi-Amoli

عبدالله جوادی آملی

b. 1933 · Iran · Shia marja, philosopher and Qur'an commentator in Qom

Abdollah Javadi-Amoli was born in Amol, on Iran’s Caspian coast, in 1933. He began religious study in Amol, first with his father, a religious scholar, then continued in Tehran from 1950 in jurisprudence, legal theory, philosophy and mysticism. In 1955 he moved to Qom, where he studied with Hossein Borujerdi, Ruhollah Khomeini and Muhammad Husayn Tabataba’i.

He taught in the Qom seminary for decades and became known as a scholar who joins jurisprudence with the Islamic philosophy and gnosis of the Mulla Sadra tradition. From 1976 he gave lessons in Qur’anic exegesis, which grew into his large commentary Tasnim. He served as Friday prayer leader in Qom until he resigned in 2009 and carried Khomeini’s letter to Mikhail Gorbachev in January 1988.

Much of his output consists of lecture series published as books in Persian and Arabic on philosophy, theology, the Qur’an, ethics and society. English translations by Shia publishers include works on theistic arguments, the environment, nobility in the Qur’an and the understanding of the Qur’an.
