Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda

عبد الفتاح أبو غدة

‘Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda was born in Aleppo on 9 May 1917, when the city was still under Ottoman rule. He studied at the Academy of Islamic Studies in Aleppo, later received further training in psychology and education at al-Azhar in Cairo, and taught at his old school in Aleppo. From 1960 he lectured on theology at Damascus University and he served as mufti of Aleppo.

He was also active in Syrian politics as a senior figure in the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, and he spent his later decades in exile, teaching in Saudi Arabia, in Riyadh and Jeddah. He died in Riyadh on 16 February 1997 and was buried in Medina. His former student Muhammad Taqi Usmani called him his “beloved teacher” and wrote an obituary for him.

His reputation rests chiefly on hadith scholarship and on the editing of classical texts, including works of ‘Abd al-Hayy al-Lucknawi, al-Qarafi and Ibn al-Qayyim; he is credited with more than seventy publications. His own authored books are mostly short treatises about the culture of learning, such as the patience of scholars under the hardships of study, the value of time for scholars, the unmarried scholars who preferred study to marriage and the Prophet as a teacher, together with studies on the history of hadith and the isnad.
